The life and revolutionary journey of Nguyen Ngoc Vu (1908-1932), the inaugural Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, will be artistically portrayed through the medium of musical theater.
Fire from the Earth, a musical masterpiece, will debut on May 15-16 in Hanoi, commemorating the 95th anniversary of the establishment of the first Hanoi Party Committee (March 17, 1930-2025).
The brainchild of Cao Ngoc Anh, the musical’s general director at the Youth Theater, Fire from the Earth is a labor of love for Hanoi, her birthplace and hometown. Ngoc Anh’s vision came to fruition when she gained access to a trove of documents about the revolutionary soldier Nguyen Ngoc Vu, a relative of hers.

Ngoc Anh collaborated with screenwriter Le Quy Hien, who adeptly adapted the script for Fire from the Earth. The musical delves into the narratives of real-life characters from the 1930s, an era that witnessed the birth of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It showcases the stories of young Nguyen Ngoc Vu, his family, friends, and a diverse array of Hanoians who fervently embraced the revolution, driven by profound patriotism and a strong revolutionary consciousness. Their unwavering belief in the leadership of Nguyen Ai Quoc (President Ho Chi Minh) served as a beacon of hope.
Vu’s unwavering conviction was that the humiliation of losing national sovereignty could only be redressed through a revolutionary struggle to reclaim independence and freedom. He was prepared to sacrifice his youth in prison or even his life for the noble cause of national liberation, refusing to be shackled by slavery.
According to the screenwriter, Le Quy Hien, Fire from the Earth symbolizes the fiery patriotism and unwavering faith in a brighter future. It represents the struggle for national liberation and pays homage to the pioneering heroes who dared to make the ultimate sacrifice, inspiring others to march towards the General Uprising in the Autumn of 1945.
Fire from the Earth ignites a sacred flame in the hearts of the people, inspiring like-minded individuals to embark on a journey fraught with challenges and hardships, but also brimming with glorious pride. The fire symbolizes the revolution, while the earth represents the people, signifying the Party’s role in illuminating the path out of the darkness of oppression. This flame was kindled and fiercely nurtured by the people because the Party itself emerged from the nation’s yearning for independence and freedom.
Hoang Quoc Viet, from the Hanoi Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, underscored the significance of the musical as a meaningful work of art. It adeptly captures the evolutionary trajectory of the Hanoi Party Committee since its inception and showcases the profound affection the production team holds for Hanoi.
