The Son River in Quang Binh Province is a pristine waterway, a gift of nature to this beautiful region. With a length of 7.729km, the river flows underground through the limestone mountains of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, emerging at the mouth of Phong Nha Cave in Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district. It is a place of natural wonder and a source of local legend.

The river’s beauty is captivating, with its tranquil waters, majestic mountains, and scenic banks. Meandering along the mountain foot, the river “hugs” the fields of corn and bananas, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting. The surrounding hamlets are scattered yet serene, adding to the charm of the area.

According to local legend, the river’s name originates from a tragic love story. A couple, deeply in love but facing familial opposition due to incompatibility, chose to end their lives in the river. Moved by their devotion, the locals named it the “Son River,” honoring their eternal love.

Visitors can explore craft villages, take boat rides to admire the mountains, visit the ancient Gia Hung church, experience cage fish farming, and learn about hat-making, rice paper production, and wine-making.

The area is also a food lover’s paradise, offering delicious local specialties such as the famous Son River carp, known for its sweet and chewy flavor. The Quang Binh region is renowned for its unique dishes, including Banh Xeo from Quang Hoa, made with red rice flour and served with snakehead fish, and “Chao canh,” a soup with large, thick noodles, yellow crab meat, snakehead fish, prawns, and bacon.

The coastal land of Quang Binh is also famous for its dried squid, ranging from oval to egg squid and octopus. Grilled to perfection over smoldering coals, the sweet and fragrant squid is a delicacy served with pungent hot chili sauce.
