Protecting Children in The Digital World

The ChildFund-initiated project, “Swipe Safe” focuses on curriculum development, app development and acquiring digital devices to train children and youth groups, parents groups and relevant authorities to ensure that children stay safe online during their e-learning or entertainment activities and are able to get help when online abuse occurs.

Nearly 20,000 students; 5,000 parents and 1,000 teachers have been provided with online safety knowledge. On top of that, many others also received training including staff of the child protection system, the National Child Helpline, the Youth Union, and cyber cafe owners.

These remarkable results of the online safety project “Swipe Safe” after five years of implementation were shared at the workshop “Sharing experiences on integrating online safety curriculum into schools”.

The workshop took place recently in Cao Bang province with the participation of 72 delegates from the Departments of Teachers and Management Development, Departments of Education and Training, and leadership boards and informatics teachers from three provinces of Hoa Binh, Cao Bang and Bac Kan.

This was not only an opportunity for the participants to look back on the project’s journey, but also place for them to share ideas to effectively educate children about online safety, especially in the context when more and more forms of child abuse using technology are emerging.

Participants all agreed upon the practicality and urgency of integrating online safety into the secondary school curriculum, at the same time showed their commitment to cooperate and promote this activity. In the coming time, in addition to providing more training for teachers and students, ChildFund will work with partners to implement new, creative and effective ideas to create a safe and comprehensive educational environment for the students.

Previously, grade 6 and 7 students from Hop Giang Secondary School, Cao Bang province excitedly took part together in a communication activity to raise awareness about online risks.

Attending the event were representatives of the Departments of Education in Hoa Binh, Bac Kan & Cao Bang provinces, as well as those coming from District Education Departments and teachers from schools in project areas.

During the event, the students participated in giving presentations about online risks, watching short skits on online safety, and answering some interactive questions.

The “Swipe Safe” project was initiated by ChildFund Vietnam in 2017. After the success of the first three years, the project go through the second phase in three cities and districts of Bac Kan, Cao Bang and Hoa Binh provinces.
