Accordingly, Tran Hung Dao Bridge will be a six-span arched truss bridge. Its curved lines resemble running waves.

With a total length of about 5.5km, the bridge will connect the districts of Hoan Kiem and Hai Ba Trung with Long Bien District on the north bank of the Red River.

The bridge’s design won the first prize in a design contest held by the city’s Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board and the Vietnam Association of Architects last October.

The bridge designer said that Tran Hung Dao Bridge will represent a combination of ancient and modern capital city on the two sides of the Red River, featuring curving waves of the bridge’s truss symbolizing endless connection.

In addition, there will be two-way ramps and a lane for pedestrians. Parks are expected to be built at both ends of the bridge.

The project’s construction will take three years and will be completed in the second quarter of 2025. Total preliminary investment capital is estimated to be about VND8.7 trillion (US$374 million).

The design perspective of Tran Hung Dao Bridge entitled “Eternal prosperity on the Red River”.

Previously, the Hanoi’s authority selected the classic Indochinese style design of the Tran Hung Dao Bridge by Transport Engineering Design Incorporated (TEDI) which will be a prestressed reinforced concrete box girder bridge combined with classical tower pylons.

This bridge design, however, met with fierce opposition from the residents of the capital.

Tran Hung Dao Bridge is one of 18 bridges crossing the Red River that were approved in the master plan of the transport sector by 2030.

Eight of these bridges have already been constructed, and an additional 10 will be built in the next decade.

It will also have lanes for bikes and pedestrians.
