Visitors Welcome at Big Mountain Resort

The notable Vung Tau landmark is often the initial sight for visitors arriving by hydrofoil ferry from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Referred to as “Big Mountain,” it may not be particularly tall, but its four peaks extend from Front Beach, spanning several kilometers along the western side of the Vung Tau peninsula.

There are several trails available to reach the summit, each with varying levels of difficulty. The asphalted bitumen road is the easiest option, commonly used by local residents for daily exercise. For a more challenging experience, there are multiple “very steep” ascents along the mountainside, as well as over 600 steps leading towards the fishing village.

The panoramic vistas from Big Mountain offer unparalleled natural beauty. From the southern side, visitors can behold the breathtaking Vung Tau Bay and the Front Beach area, as well as catch a glimpse of the nearby Small Mountain.

While exploring the western side, your attention will be drawn to the shipyards. On the eastern ridge, you will be treated to breathtaking vistas of Vung Tau City’s residential area during an impressive whale-worshipping festival.

Situated atop the majestic mountain, you will find the remnants of an old radar antenna, which is no longer in use. Additionally, a sprawling theme park can be accessed via a convenient cable car. Dotting the hillside are various local shops and residences, as well as numerous shrines and pagodas, including the renowned “Goddess of Mercy” statue, which at times may be mistaken by visitors for the Virgin Mary.

The battery of ancient French cannons is a well-liked attraction among locals due to its proximity to the main road. Additionally, this site offers an intriguing rest stop for Hashers en route to the summit.

Vung Tau and Con Dao Island Nightlife

Vung Tau is a lot more commercialized compared to the Con Dao Islands and there’s a lot more to do in the mainland town. This is partly because this area was used as a rest & recreation destination for American soldiers during the Vietnam War. Later on when Vung Tau became the centre of the oil business in the country, many Russians came to work in the oil fields and started a large resident compound here. Many of them socialised downtown and revitalised the place. If your idea of a good night out is a game of pool and chatting with girls who work as hostesses in some of the more ‘colourful’ cafes and bars, Vung Tau is the place to be. Con Dao is beautiful and very quiet at night. Nightlife activity here is still very limited. It can be quite simple – eating out at one of the local restaurants, followed by drinking Vietnamese coffee or tea or beer probably at the same venue.
