Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Van Phuc, has emphasized his aspiration to foster stronger collaboration between US and Vietnamese universities. During a meeting with representatives from 21 US higher education institutions in Hanoi on March 31, Phuc highlighted the growing educational partnership between the two countries.

Phuc noted that out of 200,000 Vietnamese citizens studying abroad, 30,000 choose the US as their destination. In the 2022-2023 academic year, Vietnam ranked fifth globally in terms of the number of international students in the US, reflecting a 5.7% increase.

Vietnam and the US have signed agreements and Memoranda of Understanding to enhance cooperation in various fields. These include digital transformation in education, English language teaching, and improving the overall quality of education.

Phuc underscored digital transformation as a strategic priority, aiming to revolutionize teaching methods and promote digital learning for both educators and students. He outlined key focus areas beyond infrastructure upgrades, such as teacher training, STEM/STEAM education, programming, and computer science programs to enhance digital skills and cybersecurity awareness. These initiatives are designed to develop a high-tech workforce, particularly in fields like big data, artificial intelligence, and semiconductor technology.

The US delegation, led by Commercial Counsellor at the US Embassy in Vietnam, Steve Green, provided insights into the US higher education system. Green mentioned that the US has nearly 4,000 universities and colleges serving approximately 20 million students, with private institutions making up over 50% of the higher education landscape.

Since late 2024, the US Department of State has collaborated with Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training through the International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP). This program focuses on strengthening cooperation in technical fields, including AI, information technology, and semiconductor chips.

The event facilitated an exchange of ideas between university representatives from both countries. They discussed training programs, scholarships, international student mobility, and the development of professions that align with emerging social trends and needs.

Currently, there are approximately 50 joint training programs between Vietnamese and US institutions in technology engineering, computer science, and economics. Additionally, direct cooperation exists in science and technology, environment and climate change, agriculture, and STEM education.

The Ministry of Education and Training has sent 127 doctoral students to the US with state budget funding since 2009. Approximately 30,000 Vietnamese students are pursuing their studies in the US through various scholarship programs or self-finance.

Vietnam is home to six US-invested educational institutions across major cities, enrolling around 3,000 students.
