Sea Turtle Returns to Sea After Laying Eggs in Quy Nhon
A heartwarming event occurred on Sunday night in the coastal commune of Nhon Hai, located in the provincial capital city of Quy Nhon. A marine conservationist, Nguyen Ton Xuan Sang, confirmed that a turtle returned to the sea after successfully laying her eggs on the beach.
The local community, including marine conservationists, sprang into action to ensure the turtle’s nest was safe. They relocated it to a secure area, away from the potential danger of being washed away by the powerful sea waves.
Sang, a dedicated conservationist, provided further details about the mother turtle’s size, measuring an impressive 0.94 meters in length and 0.86 meters in width, weighing over 90 kilograms.
Nguyen Ngoc Nam, the vice-chairman of the Nhon Hai Commune administration, recalled a similar incident involving another sea turtle. On May 21, a turtle crawled onto the beach and laid 103 eggs, and once again, Sang and his team of conservationists stepped up to relocate the nest to a safer spot.
Chu The Cuong, an official from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), shared fascinating insights into the breeding habits of mother turtles. During the breeding season, each mother turtle typically lays eggs in three to five nests, and each nest can contain around 100 eggs. After the arduous task of laying her eggs, the mother turtle covers the nest with sand and returns to the sea, leaving the eggs to incubate and hatch in the warm sand.
The IUCN has been actively involved in training locals from Nhon Hai on how to rescue and protect these magnificent creatures during their vulnerable egg-laying process. As a result of these efforts, the commune designated a part of the beach as a protected turtle nesting area, ensuring a safer environment for these ancient mariners.
