Selex Motors, founded by Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen, Nguyen Trong Hai, and Nguyen Dinh Quang, is a successful automotive manufacturing company.

Nguyen and Hai both attained their PhDs in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan and have worked for numerous companies in both the United States and Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Quang is an expert in software engineering and the Internet of Things (IoT), having developed complex national defense systems for businesses in Israel. He is highly knowledgeable and experienced in his field, making him a valuable asset to any organization.

Since late last year, the streets of Hanoi have been bustling with Selex Motors’ first smart electric scooters. Nguyen Huu Phuoc, CEO of Selex Motors, recently spoke to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper about why he and his team are pursuing a smart electric vehicle (EV) start-up. Initiating their start-up with two-wheeled vehicles instead of cars, the CEO of Selex Motors explained that scooters remain a popular choice in Vietnam and the trend won’t be changing any time soon.

“With more than 50 million motorbikes in circulation, consuming over US$5 billion worth of gasoline and releasing a large volume of carbon dioxide, gasoline-powered motorbikes have had a serious impact on the environment and public health,” Nguyen said.

Fine dust and noise pollution have worsened significantly over the years, yet effective solutions to address these issues have yet to be implemented.

Before launching the Selex Camel electric delivery scooter model in 2022, the three co-founders of Selex Motors and their team endured immense hardships.

They had collaborated to study, design, manufacture, assemble, and test-run the first electric scooter in a room.

Selex, a technology development company, has effectively tackled the issues associated with electric vehicles (EVs) by researching, developing, and manufacturing their own components. This has enabled them to offer competitive prices and even install battery swapping stations.

Selex electric ‘pick-up’ scooters are affordably priced at just under VND23 million (US$973.3) each.

Owners of electric vehicles can now swap batteries in less than two minutes, making it a much quicker alternative to charging their vehicles for three to eight hours. With this new technology, they can get back on the road much faster.

“Furthermore, the identification and payment for the batteries will be completed quickly and conveniently through QR code scans,” Nguyen said.

To swap batteries, Selex vehicle owners can use the Selex app to quickly find their nearest battery swapping station. Furthermore, the app will inform them about the number of usable batteries currently available at the station.

Nguyen added that customers need not worry about the battery lifespan of Selex vehicles. By analyzing the behavior and habits of users, Selex can accurately calculate the lifespan of its vehicles and batteries.

As Selex develops and operates its own battery swapping stations, it can take the lead in maintaining the quality of batteries and explore the possibility of withdrawing them for recycling after 10-14 years, thus ensuring the sustainability of the project, Nguyen commented.

Selex Motors has earned 10 patents and five industrial design patents, showcasing their commitment to innovation and excellence.

At present, Selex Motors’ factory has the capacity to manufacture up to 20,000 electric scooters and a staggering 100,000 lithium-ion batteries.

CEO Nguyen announced that Selex secured the first order from Lazada Logistics towards the end of last year. The initial batch of 100 Selex Camel electric pick-up scooters will be handed over to Lazada this year.

The company has also installed thirty battery swapping stations and expects to increase the number to two hundred in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Following electric scooters, Selex may manufacture electric cars or buses in the future, aiming to become a pioneer in offering a sustainable traffic ecosystem in urban areas not only in Vietnam but also other regional countries. Nguyen shared Selex’s vision with enthusiasm.
