The Magic of 43: Vietnam Hosts the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations

The 43rd session of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations (WFUCA) Executive Board convened in the enchanting city of Ha Long, Quang Ninh province, on August 5. Alongside this pivotal meeting, an international conference explored the invaluable role and contributions of UNESCO movements to the cultural industries.

The Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations (VFUA) hosted an international event, drawing participation from 40 representatives of member countries, including China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Italy, Greece, Kazakhstan, and Romania. This event also witnessed the presence of hundreds of delegates from cultural, educational, and scientific organizations within the nation.

Nguyen Xuan Thang, president of the VFUA and ex-officio member of the Executive Board of the WFUCA, delivered a speech highlighting the conference’s significance. He emphasized the potential impact on the worldwide non-governmental UNESCO movement, creating new opportunities for enhanced cooperation and exchange between UNESCO associations and clubs of member countries.

The primary objective is to facilitate more programs and initiatives across various fields, including education, science, culture, and information and communication. These endeavors align with UNESCO’s pure humanitarian ideology, all working towards the common goal of advancing humanity as a whole.

A key feature of this year’s conference was the discussion on the role of cultural industries and the creative economy in fostering economic growth, creating sustainable livelihoods, and preserving cultural heritage. The delegates shared their insights and experiences, enriching the conversation with diverse perspectives.

Le Quoc Minh, editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper and vice chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communication and Education, praised the government’s strategy of recognizing culture as an economic spearhead. He also acknowledged the efforts of Quang Ninh province in promoting the value of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, for tourism development.

The WFUCA Executive Board and member states presented their operational outcomes for 2023-2024 and approved amendments to the WFUCA Charter. They elected new leaders for the upcoming term and discussed preparations for the 44th session. The event concluded with the member states releasing the Ha Long Declaration on the creative economy, emphasizing the connection between culture, peace, and sustainable development.

This session is anticipated to have a positive impact on shaping the future of the cultural industry in the nation. It reaffirms the VFUA’s dedication and persistent efforts over the decades to boost the development of this sector, foster an environment conducive to international cooperation, and highlight the country’s role in protecting and promoting universal cultural values.

The annual WFUCA Executive Board session promotes global education, science, culture, and communication. This year’s 43rd session, hosted by the VFUA, has become a significant forum for shaping activities and initiatives in multiple fields worldwide.

The Cultural Values Council of the VFUA recognized individuals and organizations with outstanding contributions to UNESCO movements and promoting cultural heritage values. They were honored with certificates of merit and appreciation, acknowledging their dedication and impact in their respective fields.
