Bellflower cherry (Prunus campanulata) only grows in high mountain areas. These flowers bloom every spring in Da Nang city, only in Ba Na mountain.

This rare plant is well cared for and widely propagated. There are hundreds of trees in the Ba Na Hills tourist area. Bellflower cherry becomes the “specialty” of tourism in Da Nang city. It regularly attracts countless visitors.

As a plant in the rhododendron family, the bellflower cherry has flowers shaped like a small bell, which looks very beautiful. This flower features dainty nodding cherry red bell-shaped flowers with creamy white edges at the ends of the stems from early to mid-summer. Its serrated heart-shaped leaves remain green in color throughout the season. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.

Bellflower cherry will grow to be about 18 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 18 inches. Its foliage tends to remain dense right to the ground, not requiring facer plants in front. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 5 years. As an herbaceous perennial, this plant will usually die back to the crown each winter and will regrow from the base each spring.

This plant will require occasional maintenance and upkeep and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. This species has some characteristic(s) that may warrant special consideration. This plant does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It may require supplemental watering during periods of drought or extended heat.

Ba Na is one of the very few places in Vietnam with suitable natural conditions for bellflower cherries to grow. Ba Na Hills tourist area has planted many of these trees over the years to create a landscape for this high mountain area. There are more than 500 trees planted in the resort.
