Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam held fruitful bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the prestigious ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.
PM Modi extended his warmest congratulations to President To Lam on his recent assumption of enhanced leadership duties and expressed his optimism for continued joint efforts to fortify the already robust ties between India and Vietnam.
He also reiterated India’s support and solidarity with Vietnam in light of the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi. President To Lam expressed his gratitude for India’s swift provision of emergency humanitarian aid and disaster relief through Operation Sadbhav.
“The leaders reaffirmed the depth of their civilizational and cultural bonds, as well as the strategic importance of their relationship, characterized by unwavering mutual trust, understanding, and shared interests,” according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Recalling Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to India last month, they explored avenues to advance bilateral cooperation and further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between their nations.
The discussion also encompassed vital regional and global issues, including the Indo-Pacific region, with both leaders emphasizing the crucial role of the Global South in international platforms.
In a social media post, PM Modi shared his pleasure in meeting with President To Lam, stating that they reviewed the breadth of India-Vietnam friendship and anticipated adding momentum to areas such as connectivity, trade, and cultural exchanges.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that PM Modi and President To Lam discussed strategies to further elevate the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights.
Earlier, on Sunday, PM Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, conveying his deep concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and assuring India’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people.
He also held bilateral engagements with Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Kuwait’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, reinforcing historical ties and people-to-people connections.
During his meeting with PM Oli, they discussed a range of mutual interests to strengthen cooperation across various sectors of the enduring and multifaceted India-Nepal partnership.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi addressed the 79th United Nations General Assembly’s ‘Summit of the Future’, emphasizing the responsible use of technology and the need for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to act as a bridge rather than a barrier.
He also brought attention to cyber, maritime, and space as emerging conflict arenas, underscoring the urgency for global action to match global ambitions.
Additionally, PM Modi advocated for reforms in global institutions, deeming them essential for maintaining relevance. He reaffirmed India’s dedication to safeguarding the interests of humanity, embodying the nation’s commitment to ‘One earth, One Family, One future.’
On Sunday, PM Modi engaged with top tech leaders and CEOs from the USA at a Roundtable hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Engineering, highlighting India’s growth prospects and exploring avenues for collaboration and innovation.
PM Modi’s presence in New York marks the second leg of his three-day visit to the United States, during which he has already participated in the Quad Leaders’ Summit and held bilateral meetings with key leaders, including US President Joe Biden.
