The Vietnamese Department of Cinematography has instructed Netflix and FPT Play to remove a drama series featuring a map depicting the disputed nine-dash line. Both streaming platforms were given 24 hours to comply with the directive and report back to the department. The department stated that it had reviewed all 39 episodes of the drama and found the nine-dash line appearing in multiple episodes. It deemed the inclusion of the line, along with the dialogue and subtitles, to be a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty and its Law on Cinematography. FPT Play had already blurred the image of the line in some episodes, but the department still deemed the content inappropriate for screening in Vietnam. Both platforms have acknowledged the request and have taken necessary action. This incident follows recent bans on the film ‘Barbie’ and the protest against a K-pop concert for featuring the disputed map.
