The Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) and the Committee for External Relations of Russia’s St. Petersburg city held a virtual symposium on March 27, focusing on enhancing the role of women and girls in science and technology.

Nearly 90 attendees, including female scientists, lecturers, and students from both nations, joined the event.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuyen, President of the VWU, highlighted the impact of female scientists globally, who have shaped human history and enhanced the quality of life. She emphasized Vietnam’s dedication to scientific advancement, citing the National Digital Transformation Program, the Law on Gender Equality, and the National Strategy on Gender Equality for 2021-2030 as key frameworks supporting women’s involvement in scientific research and the country’s development.

Tuyen also discussed the VWU’s initiatives to encourage women’s participation in science and technology, such as establishing the Vietnam Association for Intellectual Women and issuing resolutions to support women’s international integration by 2030. Additionally, the union has launched programs like the Kovalevskaia Awards to foster scientific research, innovation, and startup culture among women, encouraging their engagement in the digital economy and society.

Vyacheslav Kalganov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg, acknowledged the Vietnam Women’s Union’s significant role in Vietnam-Russia diplomatic relations. He commended the achievements of Russian female scientists across various research fields while also recognizing the persistent gender imbalance in the scientific community. Kalganov highlighted the Russian government’s efforts to support women in science, including creating favorable conditions for career continuity during motherhood and promoting the accomplishments of female scientists.

He also praised Vietnam’s commitment to sustainable development, with science and technology as a top priority, and its efforts to enhance gender equality and foster a strong community of female scientists who have made significant contributions to the country’s economic growth.

The symposium served as a platform for participants to celebrate the achievements of women from both countries in science, socio-economic development, and people-to-people diplomacy. The VWU and the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg agreed to collaborate further on exchange programs and online forums to promote women’s engagement in science, fostering a more inclusive and innovative future for both nations.
