Hanoi kicked off a week-long sports festival on August 3, with over 3,000 local athletes gathering at the Thong Nhat (Reunification) Park in the Hai Ba Trung district. The event is one of many celebrations leading up to the 70th anniversary of the city’s Liberation Day on October 10, 1954.

The opening ceremony of the sports festival united participants from all walks of life, including the general public, civil servants, the armed forces, students, and senior citizens.

With a diverse range of competitors, the week-long festival aims to encourage a more active and healthier lifestyle among Hanoi’s residents. Nguyen Thi Hong Oanh, Director of the Hai Ba Trung District Cultural, Information, and Sports Center, emphasized that the competition goes beyond physical activity. It is intended to inspire residents to follow in the footsteps of President Ho Chi Minh and contribute to the development of both the capital and the nation.

Hanoi’s Thanh Xuan district also joined the celebrations with a sports competition of its own, involving over 1,000 athletes from 11 wards. The enthusiasm for sports was further evident in the air volleyball tournament held in Dan Phuong Rural District, with nearly 400 athletes from across the region. This tournament holds special significance as it commemorates not only the 70th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation but also the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

Bui Thi Quyen, director of the Dan Phuong District Cultural, Information and Sports Center, underscored the importance of physical exercise, highlighting it as a golden path to better health and a stronger community. With 37 teams and nearly 400 athletes, this year’s tournament promises intense competition and a true testament to the spirit of sportsmanship.
