Nguyen Van Son, a 38-year-old man from the Vietnamese coastal city of Hai Phong, and Besa Kim, a 55-year-old South Korean citizen, unexpectedly crossed paths during their running journey in Da Nang City.

For months, they have been running along National Highway No. 1, a vital road that stretches from Ca Mau, the southernmost province, all the way to the bustling center of Ho Chi Minh City.

Recently, numerous onlookers have been captivated by images of two individuals carrying backpacks adorned with a slogan promoting a journey across Vietnam.

The group reached Ky Anh District, situated in the north-central province of Ha Tinh, at 10:30 am on February 25th. Their ultimate destination is the capital city of Hanoi.

On Son’s backpack, the phrase “Sơn xe hơi – đi bộ xuyên Việt, Sài Gòn – Hà Nội” (Son the car – walking across Vietnam, Saigon – Hanoi) is printed.

“Son Xe Hoi” (Son the Car) is the Facebook account alias of Nguyen Van Son, an automotive trader based in Nui Deo Town, Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong.

On January 11, 2023, just prior to the Lunar New Year celebration, he journeyed to Ho Chi Minh City to execute his strategy.

Before the big day, he spent three years preparing his strength and endurance for this challenge.

Additionally, he successfully convinced his family to support the daring proposition.

Despite being an experienced runner, he openly acknowledged that the initial week presented the greatest test for him. Adjusting to sleeping in the wilderness or beneath a bridge along the running route was particularly challenging.

During his trip, he often found himself in remote areas with no houses nearby. As nightfall arrived, he had to take initiative and set up camp along the roadside.

There were moments when he contemplated quitting running. However, he ultimately made the choice to abandon approximately 10 kilograms of baggage in order to press on with his journey.

He seeks solace and joy as he traverses the path, finding respite in the act of running.

“Running through Vietnam poses a significant challenge that demands immense perseverance,” stated Son.

On my way, I consumed something that caused me to experience intense abdominal discomfort.

“My physical fatigue overwhelmed me to the point where I couldn’t help but cry, engulfed by a sense of profound loneliness.”

He will always remember the unforgettable experience of crossing the majestic Cu Mong mountain pass, a link between the two vibrant south-central provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen.

“I arrived at the foot of the pass at 5:00 pm, but unfortunately, I could not locate any suitable shelter for the night. As a result, I had no choice but to keep walking,” Son reminiscenced, reflecting on his indelible recollection.

“It was becoming dark as I arrived at the center of the passage.

“I was overcome with exhaustion, causing my hair to bristle, as I noticed numerous abandoned altars strewn along the roadside.

“It wasn’t until I descended the mountain pass that evening at 9:00 pm and glimpsed the shimmering lights emanating from nearby houses that I realized I had triumphed over the obstacles.”

The son removes his shoes and examines his feet, revealing numerous calluses and blisters.

The shoes he is currently wearing are his third pair; he had to retire the previous two due to wear and tear. He decided to keep them as mementos.

Son carries a backpack on his back that contains a selection of essential items for the trip. Included are packets of cold and flu medicine, toothpaste, fresh water, a camping hammock, a mosquito net, a few packs of instant noodles, and a pot for boiling water.

Along his journey, the backpacker has acquired not only essential items like clothes and toiletries, but also thoughtful gifts from kind-hearted individuals. Among these are delicious treats in the form of sweets and cookies; tokens of well-wishes bestowed upon him during his travels.

He frequently discusses Vietnam and expresses his aspiration to eventually run from Ca Mau Province, located at Vietnam’s southern tip, to Hanoi, on his Facebook profile.

In early 2023, Kim embarked on a journey from South Korea to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, he arranged transportation to Ca Mau in pursuit of his long-held dream.

Before commencing his adventurous journey, he meticulously crafted a substantial poster, which he artfully displayed on the wall adjacent to the starting point of his expedition. This visual spectacle duly served as a means to apprise all those concerned about his grand undertaking.

“`

On the morning of February 28th, I discovered that there was another individual embarking on the same journey as me. This fellow traveler, named Son, also had a backpack labeled ‘Hành trình xuyên Việt từ Cà Mau – Hà Nội’ (The journey through Ca Mau – Hanoi).

“`

The runners briefly conversed in Vietnamese before resuming their journey towards the Hai Van Pass in Da Nang, all with a shared objective of reaching the national capital of Hanoi.

Kim had a divergent approach compared to Son, as he opted not to run continuously. Instead, he made intermittent stops along the road to admire the various sights.

The individual from South Korea also diligently documented numerous accounts of encouragement and inspiration provided by the Vietnamese people along his running journey.

According to Kim, his two-month journey has left him with numerous cherished memories of Vietnam, a nation known for its abundance of smiles.

People in certain areas along his journey were able to identify him by the Vietnamese phrases inscribed on his backpack.

Upon reaching a roadside stand, they made a purchase of several bottles of fresh water. As an act of encouragement, they handed him a few bills.

” ‘Good luck!’ they said to me, and I eagerly anticipated resuming my journey,” the South Korean shared on his official Facebook page.

Kim finds joy in many things during his walks. However, one of the most daunting experiences for him is crossing paths with stray dogs.`

“I often find myself being pursued by dogs, which may explain why I have developed a faster running pace,” he said lightheartedly.

According to both Son and Kim, they anticipate requiring an additional month to accomplish their objective in Hanoi, which would mark a significant milestone for them.

“I am determined to achieve my goals and I hope that sharing my story will motivate others to prioritize their fitness journey,” stated Son.

“I aim to promote and popularize the positive image of resilient and healthy individuals from Vietnam.”
