Approximately 52% of total bets placed backed Tyson by TKO/KO/DQ at DraftKings, with odds of +250 on Friday midday, just eight hours before the highly anticipated card was set to commence streaming exclusively on Netflix. Nearly half of the method-of-victory wagers were placed on Tyson, while 13% of bets and handles at DraftKings favored the odds of +150 for a Paul victory through the same method.
Despite the excitement, not all states with legalized gambling offered wagering on the fight. This was due to alterations in standard boxing rules, including shorter rounds of two minutes and the use of heavier 14-ounce gloves instead of the usual 11 ounces. Specifically, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) prohibited any betting on the match, citing these amended rules as the reason.
The influx of money placed on Tyson caused a shift in consensus odds throughout the week. BetMGM, for instance, posted an outright Paul win at -190 on Friday afternoon, a significant change from the opening odds of -275. However, Tyson still proved popular with bettors, attracting 54% of the handle and 69% of tickets on the fight. The value of a Tyson moneyline ticket at BetMGM on Friday stood at +190, a notable shift from the odds of around +275 just ten days prior.
In the lead-up to the fight, over 70% of moneyline bets at DraftKings predicted Tyson as the outright winner, indicating a strong interest in the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion’s chances against the younger Paul.
“The Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight is on pace to break records and become the most bet-on boxing match in BetMGM’s history,” said Alex Rella, a senior trader at BetMGM. “While we are seeing an increase in bets placed on Paul, Tyson remains a favorite among bettors. However, a first-round knockout by Iron Mike would be the worst-case scenario for us.”
BetMGM’s odds reflected the potential financial impact of a quick victory for Tyson, with tickets for “Mike Tyson to win in Round 1” priced at a steep +1400 on Friday. This particular outcome ranked as the third most-bet ticket at BetMGM, following Tyson TKO/KO/DQ (+250) and a Tyson victory via points decision (+1100).
It is worth noting that Paul’s previous bout with Nate Diaz in August 2023 already holds the distinction of being the second-most bet-on boxing match in BetMGM’s history.
