“Celebrating Women’s Empowerment: The Power of Comic Art in Da Nang”

The Da Nang Fine Arts Museum played host to an extraordinary event on Thursday, with the opening ceremony of ‘The World Needs Superheroines’ exhibition. This event coincided with the celebrations of Spain’s National Day on October 12th and Vietnam’s Women’s Day on October 20th, making it an even more special occasion.

This powerful exhibition is a collaborative effort organized by the Embassy of Spain, alongside the Spanish Association of Comic Authors, the Herstóricas Association, Comicola Vietnam, and the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum. Together, they showcase the incredible talent of female artists from both Vietnam and Spain.

‘The World Needs Superheroines’ is more than just an exhibition—it’s a movement. It aims to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions of women to society and foster a cross-cultural dialogue between emerging voices in the comic sector from Vietnam and Spain. With a diverse range of styles and subjects, these artists are challenging stereotypes and celebrating the strength of women.

The exhibition features an impressive 64 works of art, created by 62 female artists and author groups. Each piece tells a unique story, exploring themes such as feminism, love, friendship, and social issues. It is a celebration of the limitless creativity and talent of women in the comic art form, which is gaining popularity in Vietnam.

Nguyen Thi Hoi An, deputy director of the Da Nang Department of Culture and Sports, highlights the cultural significance of the exhibition. She explains that it provides a unique opportunity for residents to immerse themselves in Spanish culture and gain a deeper understanding of Spanish life, especially the powerful role of women, portrayed as superheroines in these creative artworks.

This event is more than just an artistic showcase; it serves as a cultural bridge, fostering strong cooperation, exchange, and mutual understanding between the people of Da Nang and Spain. It is a testament to the power of art in bringing people together and celebrating our shared humanity.

For 24-year-old Gia Phong, the exhibition held a particular appeal. He was drawn to the themes of gender equality and the contemporary comic works, which offered a unique insight into the aspirations and lives of women from two different cultures. It provided a space to explore and celebrate female empowerment.

Jose, a Spanish national living in Da Nang for the past two years, also shared his thoughts on the exhibition. He expressed how it helped him gain a deeper appreciation for the arts and cultures of both countries, especially recognizing the crucial role women play in family life.

The exhibition is open to the public from October 18th to November 6th at the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum, offering a unique cultural experience. Carmen Cano de Lasala, the Spanish Ambassador to Vietnam, emphasized the impact of this event, stating, “Today’s exhibition is just the beginning. It marks the start of many cultural and artistic connection activities to come.”
