According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), this award recognizes rural destinations that embrace tourism as a crucial factor in promoting development, creating new job and income opportunities, while preserving and promoting community-based values and products.

The award recognizes villages that have demonstrated commitment to innovation and sustainability in every aspect of their lives, including economic, social, and environmental domains, with a particular emphasis on developing sustainable tourism initiatives in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
