Vietnam’s box office scene witnessed a notable year in 2023, generating $150 million, but it was 2024 that truly stood out with a remarkable performance, falling just shy of the 2019 record. The box office earnings for 2024 totaled VND4.1 trillion, approximately $161 million.

The year 2024 boasted some significant hits, including ‘Mai,’ ‘Face Off 7: One Wish,’ ‘Betting with Ghost,’ and ‘Spirit Whisker – The Revenant.’ These films dominated the box office, with ‘Mai’ and ‘Face Off 7: One Wish’ leading the pack in terms of revenue generation.

The success of these movies, particularly those directed by renowned names like Tran Thanh and Ly Hai, highlights a clear preference among Vietnamese audiences for stories centered around family life and intergenerational conflicts. ‘Mai,’ for instance, topped the charts with a staggering VND551 billion ($21.6 million) in revenue, showcasing the power of relatable, family-oriented themes.

On the other hand, films that veered away from family-centric narratives and explored themes of adventure and youth exploration struggled to find an audience. Titles like B4S, ‘Claws,’ ‘That Summer Will Be Back,’ and ‘Kinh Van Hoa’ underperformed at the box office, according to Box Office Vietnam.

It’s worth noting that South Korean cinema also made its mark in Vietnam during this period, with ‘Exhuma’ and ‘Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Earth Symphony’ attracting significant attention. ‘Exhuma’ alone brought in VND212 billion ($8.3 million), underscoring the appeal of diverse cinematic offerings.

Box Office Vietnam’s analysis points to a consistent trend from 2023 to 2024, with certain directors and franchises, such as those mentioned, consistently delivering crowd-pleasing hits that resonate with Vietnamese moviegoers.
