Vi Kien Thanh, the Head of the Vietnam Cinema Department, confirmed on Wednesday that the movie “Tro Tan Ruc Ro” has been selected as Vietnam’s official entry for the Oscars. The selection was approved by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. According to Thanh, this decision was made by the national council responsible for picking films for the Oscars, and “Tro Tan Ruc Ro” received the highest number of votes. The movie, directed by Bui Thac Chuyen, is an adaptation of two short stories by Nguyen Ngoc Tu, depicting women in rural villages in Vietnam’s southern region. An Nam Film, the production company behind the movie, will submit it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by October 2. In addition to being honored as the Best Featured Film at the 2023 Golden Kite Awards, “Tro Tan Ruc Ro” also won the prestigious ‘Golden Balloon’ at the Festival des 3 Continents 2022 in France.
