The painting titled “En plein air (Outdoors)” by Mai Trung Thu was sold for EUR828,420, making it the highest-priced artwork in the Asian Painters auction called “Modern Vietnamese Art” by Aguttes.
The artwork, created between 1940 and 1945, portrays two women. One woman is seen reading a book, while the other appears lost in thought. Both women are dressed in elegant long dresses, with low bun hairstyles and red lipstick, giving them a classic and sophisticated appearance.
Another notable artwork in the auction was “Portrait de Madame Nguyen Nguyet Nga (Portrait of Madame Nguyen Nguyet Nga)”, which was sold for EUR413,720. This painting was created by Mai Trung Thu in 1950.
According to the auction house’s description, the painting by Mai Trung Thu testifies to the beauty and richness of a unique style that combines Western and Vietnamese influences. It gracefully captures everyday life and human emotions.
The third highest-priced artwork was “Femme aux oeillets (Woman with carnations)” by Le Pho, which sold for EUR407,340. This artwork depicts a girl sitting on a chair, holding a branch of flowers in one hand, with a contemplative expression on her face.
Several other paintings were also sold at high prices during the auction. These include “Jeune femme au tricot (Young woman is knitting)” by Luong Xuan Nhi, “Marguerite au jardin jouant avec les poussins (Marguerite is playing with the chicks)” by Vu Cao Dam, “Fleurs (Flowers)” by Le Pho, “Zither – Erhu” by Mai Trung Thu, “Femmes tissant le rotin (Women weaving rattan)” by Nguyen Phan Chanh, and “Les chrysanthèmes (Chrysanthemums)” by Vu Cao Dam. These artworks were sold for prices ranging from EUR-164,000 to EUR311,640.
A self-portrait of painter Le Pho auctioned for one million dollars
The painting “Autoportrait dans la forêt” (A self-portrait in the forest) by Le Pho (1907-2001) fetched over one million dollars at an auction at Sotheby’s, Paris on March 16.
