A spokeperson of Netflix Inc. told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday afternoon that the video streaming platform had taken down the ‘Little Women’ TV series following the request of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications.
“According to the request of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information, we have removed ‘Little Women’ TV series on our platform in Vietnam,” a spokeperson of Netflix Inc. said.
Vietnamese authorities requested the series’ removal on Tuesday after the drama sparked public uproar owing to its dialogue after two weeks of broadcasting.
The sitcom received backlash after episode five was broadcast on Netflix, due to lines about South Korean veterans during the American war in Vietnam.

The controversy grew as episodes seven and eight of the film were aired, with lines like “One South Korean soldier wiped out 20 Vietnamese soldiers at once” and “One soldier single-handedly killed ten.”
Le Quang Tu Do, head of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information, said that the South Korean TV show was requested to be taken off the air for violating Vietnam’s laws regulating media and cinema for falsifying history, downplaying revolutionary accomplishments, and insulting the Vietnamese nation.
On Thursday afternoon, ‘Little Women’ disappeared from the top one trending movies on Netflix in Vietnam, a position it had held for several weeks.
The keyword ‘Little Women’ also does not lead to South Korean television series, but rather to a namesake American movie.
Although the drama has been removed in Vietnam, it can still be viewed from outside the country.
After the series was taken from Netflix in Vietnam, the drama’s production company, Studio Dragon, published an announcement about the present situation.
“We promise to carefully consider various socially and culturally sensitive topics in future media content,” the company stated.
Meanwhile, ‘Little Women’ will conclude with the final two episodes showing this weekend.
‘Little Women’, starring Kim Go Eun, Nam Ji Hyun, Park Ji Hoo, Wi Ha Joon, Uhm Ji Won, and others, depicts the story of three sisters who grew up in the lower class and whose lives become linked with one of South Korea’s richest and most powerful families.
