The Quintessence of Tonkin is an awe-inspiring outdoor spectacle that showcases the rich cultural heritage of northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta region. As Vietnam’s first outdoor water puppetry performance, it quickly became a must-see attraction for visitors to Hanoi. The show masterfully combines puppetry, dance, and acrobatics with stunning visual effects and an impressive sound system, creating an authentic and immersive experience.

Many of the artists are local farmers specially trained for these performances.

The open-air theater, inspired by the serene beauty of a lake surrounded by lush green mountains, sets the perfect stage for the show. With a 4,300-square-meter water stage and over 250 performers, the production is both grand and intimate, delivering a spectacular showcase of Vietnamese culture.

The show’s backdrop captures the essence of northern Vietnam’s farming lifestyle.

Divided into six segments, the 75-minute performance takes the audience on a journey through Poetry, Buddhism, Nostalgia, Music and Painting, Peace and Joy, and Festivals. Each act unveils different facets of Vietnamese culture, beliefs, and the resilient spirit of its people through labor, education, knowledge, and artistic traditions.

Farming activities, such as bailing water into the fields and catching fish, are reenacted on stage.

Traditional folk elements are presented with a modern and creative twist, ensuring a unique and memorable experience for the audience. Local actors, an extensive prop system, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting enhance the show’s impact, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Thay Mountain.

The Quintessence of Tonkin won the Stevie Awards’ Innovation in Product Design and Development Award in 2018. It continues to enchant audiences with its vibrant portrayal of northern Vietnam’s cultural life, leaving them with a deep sense of emotion and appreciation for the region’s rich heritage.
