The Victory Hotel in Hanoi resonated with the lively rhythms of Latin music on December 15. The highly anticipated 12th Latin American Music Night brought together a diverse crowd of over 200 people, including diplomats, students, and cultural enthusiasts, once again bridging the distance between Vietnam and Latin America.

Organized by the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations, in collaboration with the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association and Latin American embassies, the event celebrated the deep connection between Vietnam and Latin America. Music, dance, and camaraderie took center stage, uniting everyone in a shared appreciation of cultural diversity.

Nguyen Ngoc Ky, Chairman of the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations, kicked off the evening with a heartfelt welcome. “This night is about more than just music,” he said. “It’s about strengthening the bonds between our countries and celebrating the beauty of our diverse cultures. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the power of people-to-people diplomacy and look forward to new friendships in the coming year.”

His words set the perfect tone for the event, which seamlessly wove together entertainment and cultural exchange. The guests were treated to a vibrant showcase of Latin American culture, while also having the opportunity to forge meaningful connections.

For Jorge Luis, a Cuban exchange student at the Vietnam Academy of Cryptography Techniques, the night held a special significance. “Hearing the familiar songs and seeing my fellow Cubans made me feel like I was back home,” he shared. “It was a bittersweet moment because I missed my family, but I was also proud to represent my country here in Vietnam. One of the most memorable parts was being able to share stories and converse in Spanish with new friends. This event made me realize how much the Vietnamese value diversity and connection.”

The event offered a unique glimpse into Latin American culture for the Vietnamese attendees. Mai, a student at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, described it as an enriching experience. “It was like taking a trip to Cuba without leaving Hanoi,” she said. “The program gave us a deeper understanding of Cuban culture, and it felt both exciting and familiar at the same time. This event not only entertained but also educated us, and I left with a greater appreciation for the warmth and diversity of Latin America.”

Phuong Nhi, a Spanish major at Hanoi University, echoed similar sentiments. “The event created a cozy atmosphere despite the cold weather,” she shared. “It was a great opportunity to practice my language skills and immerse myself in Latin American culture. Although I wish there had been interactive games to make the exchange more engaging, the dances, energy, and sense of community were truly special.”

The performances of the night were a true spectacle, showcasing the talent and passion of Latin America. From the sensual tango to the lively cha-cha, each performance brought the audience to their feet. A highlight of the evening was the “Hey Hola” mashup, a collaboration between artists from embassies, friendship organizations, and local universities, which had everyone dancing along.

In addition to the musical performances, the participating embassies presented a delightful array of traditional foods and beverages. Guests indulged in Cuban and Argentinean delicacies, among others, further immersing themselves in the Latin American culture.

The success of the event was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the organizers. The Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations, the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association, and embassies from across Latin America worked together to create a program that celebrated both the diversity and unity of Latin American culture, ensuring an evening that left a lasting impression on all who attended.

As the formal program drew to a close, the dance floor opened up, and the celebration continued. Diplomats, students, and guests joined hands, dancing and spinning to the lively Latin beats. The energy in the room was contagious, breaking down barriers and creating connections that transcended language and cultural differences.

H.E. Marcos A. Bednarski, Ambassador of Argentina to Vietnam, captured the essence of the night perfectly. “This event is a shining example of the warmth and mutual respect between our regions,” he said. “It serves as a bridge, bringing us closer together and fostering a deeper understanding.”

The 12th Night of Latin American Music was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the power of cultural exchange. It left a lasting impression on all who attended, strengthening the bonds between Vietnam and Latin America and serving as a reminder that, despite our differences, we are all connected through our shared humanity.

For Jorge Luis, the event will forever hold a special place in his heart. “As I danced that night, I felt like I was dancing between two worlds – my beloved Cuba and my new home, Vietnam,” he reflected. “In that moment, they felt like one, and I felt a deep sense of belonging.”
