Hanoi, a city rich in history and cultural heritage, has long understood the impact of film on tourism promotion. The capital city of Vietnam boasts a proud cinematic tradition, with films such as Em be Hanoi and Bao gio cho den thang Muoi resonating with audiences worldwide. However, in recent years, there has been a notable disconnect between the tourism industry and cinema, with the city’s filmmaking prowess underutilized in showcasing Hanoi’s allure as a travel destination.

Hanoi, the birthplace of revolutionary filmmaking in Vietnam, has nurtured generations of talented filmmakers. Despite this, the number of films promoting the capital’s culture and tourism remains disproportionately low given the city’s vast potential. Dr. Trinh Le Anh of Hanoi National University highlights the untapped opportunity to leverage the beautiful shots of Hanoi in films to enhance its tourism appeal.

In an era of global integration, it is imperative for Hanoi to take proactive measures to encourage and promote the city’s cinematic capabilities. Director Dao Thanh Hung emphasizes the need for supportive regulations and procedures to boost the film industry and link it to the capital’s socio-economic development strategy. Additionally, adopting unique policies to attract foreign filmmakers can further enhance Hanoi’s reputation as a desirable filming location.

To fully capitalize on Hanoi’s cinematic potential, the city can consider mobilizing social resources to invest in a film studio system, modeled after successful examples in China. This would create a cultural and entertainment industrial complex, offering tourists a unique blend of majestic architecture, natural landscapes, and engaging art performances, entertainment, and shopping experiences. A long-term plan is essential to realize this vision for the capital.

Recognizing the power of cinematic storytelling, Hanoi Radio and Television recently launched the film project “For the Love of Hanoi.” This initiative aims to bring authentic and touching stories about the capital to audiences, showcasing the vibrant life of its people. The project introduces viewers to the dedication of young Hanoians in shaping a modern and civilized city and the tireless efforts of police officers who maintain order day and night.

Music videos also play a pivotal role in promoting Hanoi’s tourism, as exemplified by saxophonist Kenny G’s MV Going Home. This award-winning production has garnered millions of views, casting a spotlight on the city and attracting both domestic and international visitors. Le Quoc Minh, editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan newspaper, underscores the impact of such visual media, stating that it offers a unique and easily receptive way to showcase Hanoi to the world.

Hanoi’s cinematic heritage and potential serve as a powerful tool to enhance the city’s reputation as a desirable destination. By fostering a supportive environment for the film industry and leveraging the art of storytelling, Hanoi can effectively showcase its cultural identity, hospitality, and rich historical context to a global audience.
