THE HANOI TIMES — Noi Bai International Airport’s expanded Terminal T2 is set to commence operations on December 19, marking a significant step toward full automation as Hanoi addresses the growing passenger demand.
This upgrade aims to elevate service quality, boost capacity, and solidify Noi Bai’s position as a vital international hub for both the capital and Vietnam.

The expansion aligns with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s directive to alleviate strain on existing infrastructure by increasing the terminal’s annual capacity from 10 million to 15 million passengers.
Terminal T2 has been operating beyond its intended capacity, serving nearly 13 million passengers in the first 11 months of 2025, despite being designed for 10 million annually.
According to Nguyen Huu Loi, Deputy Director of the T2 Terminal Expansion Project Management Board, the project is two months ahead of schedule.
Initiated in May 2024, the project boasts a total investment of nearly US$200 million, with a US$184 million main construction package fully funded by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).
Most construction and installation work is complete, with final preparations underway for the official launch.

The autogate system, equipped with biometric facial recognition, significantly reduces check-in time.
Regarding terminal equipment, Loi noted that imported check-in and security screening systems will be installed under the supervision of foreign suppliers, who will also provide staff training and maintenance certification.
Post-expansion, the terminal’s total floor area increases from 139,216 to 200,164 square meters. Check-in counters rise from 96 to 144, including 24 self-service baggage drop counters.
The project introduces 24 kiosk check-in machines, expands security screening zones from two to three, increases departure gates from 17 to 30, and installs 15 new aerobridges to enhance access for wide-body aircraft. Baggage carousels increase from six to eight, expediting the arrival process.
New self-service kiosks and baggage drop stations minimize queues, enabling passengers to check in, select seats, print boarding passes, and check luggage independently.
A next-generation 920CT 3D screening system accelerates security checks, eliminating the need for passengers to remove electronic devices or liquids.

The 920CT 3D scanning system ensures thorough inspections, detecting any hazardous items without fail.
Advanced body scanners, compliant with international safety standards, utilize non-ionizing millimeter-wave technology, safe for pregnant women and individuals with pacemakers. These scanners conduct rapid checks while safeguarding privacy through avatar-style images.
Automated immigration gates with biometric verification streamline entry and exit procedures, while green design features and landscaped areas enhance the overall passenger experience.
Noi Bai International Airport ranks among Vietnam’s largest airports. In the first 11 months of this year, it handled nearly 13 million passengers, the second-highest nationwide, and processed approximately 700,000 tons of cargo, the highest in the country.
The airport is designed to accommodate 60 million passengers annually by 2030 and 100 million by 2050.
Terminal T2, dedicated to international flights, began operations in January 2015. The total investment in the terminal was VND18 trillion ($707 million) through ODA loans. In 2019, Terminal T2 served 11.4 million passengers, surpassing its designed capacity of 10 million.
