The Visionary: Uncle Ho’s Legacy Through the Eyes of a Diasporan Artist

All the paintings showcased here are the artistic creations of overseas artist Dao Trong Ly. Since taking on the role of managing the Memorial Site of President Ho Chi Minh in Nakhon Phanom province in 2018, Ly has crafted these paintings, drawing inspiration from the photos and documents he discovered during his tenure.

The Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is currently hosting an exhibition of 55 paintings depicting President Ho Chi Minh, created by Vietnamese artist Dao Trong Ly, based in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. The exhibition is a collaboration between the museum and the Association of Thai People of Vietnamese Origin in Nakhon Phanom, and it commemorates the 134th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birth.

The paintings on display showcase the life and revolutionary journey of President Ho Chi Minh, a hero of national liberation and a cultural icon. Ly’s artwork captures the pivotal moments in Ho Chi Minh’s quest for national salvation, celebrating his immense contribution to Vietnam’s history.


Artist Dao Trong Ly has been managing the Memorial Site of President Ho Chi Minh in Nakhon Phanom since 2018, and it is during this time that he created these paintings. Inspired by his deep admiration and gratitude for Uncle Ho, Ly used photographs and documents as references to create these heartfelt artworks.


Each painting tells a story of President Ho Chi Minh’s life, from his departure to seek freedom for his country to the glorious milestones he achieved during the revolution. Ly’s artwork highlights the simplicity, honesty, and dignity that defined Uncle Ho’s life, serving as an educational tool for younger generations about Vietnam’s national solidarity and revolutionary history.

These paintings vividly bring to life the resounding revolutionary career of Uncle Ho, from his early days of seeking a path to save Vietnam to the crucial milestones in the nation’s history.


Dao Trong Ly, born in 1951, hails from a patriotic overseas Vietnamese family in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. He currently works at the President Ho Chi Minh Memorial Site in his province, dedicating his talents to preserving the legacy of this beloved leader.


At the conclusion of the exhibition, Ly plans to present his artworks to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, ensuring that his tribute to President Ho Chi Minh will endure for years to come.


The exhibition will remain open until May 22, 2024, at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi, offering visitors a unique opportunity to appreciate the life and achievements of President Ho Chi Minh through the eyes of a talented overseas Vietnamese artist.

Ly’s artworks capture the essence of an outstanding leader, highlighting Ho Chi Minh’s simple life and his compassionate love and care for people from all walks of life.
This exhibition serves as a tribute to President Ho Chi Minh, honoring his great merit and legacy, not just for the people of Vietnam but also for overseas Vietnamese like Dao Trong Ly and the community in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.
