Cao Dinh Huy, chairman of the People’s Committee of Tuy Hoa City in Phu Yen, announced on Saturday that the city was awarded the 2023 Asian Townscape Award at a ceremony in Busan, South Korea on Friday.
Out of the nine projects from five different countries, including Japan, China, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, Nghinh Phong Tower Square is the only representative from Southeast Asia to receive the award, according to the Tuy Hoa administration.
The tower square is located in the heart of the coastal park in Tuy Hoa, and it was inspired by the local tourist site Ganh Da Dia, also known as the Reef of Plates, as well as the legend of Lac Long Quan and Au Co, the ancestors of the current Vietnamese people.
The tower includes two columns that are 35 and 30 meters high, representing Lac Long Quan and Au Co. Below each tower, there are 50 stacked stone blocks, symbolizing the story of 50 children following their mother Au Co to the sea and 50 others following their father Lac Long Quan to the mountains. The tower is called Nghinh Phong, which means “welcoming the wind.”
Nghinh Phong Tower Square, which was inaugurated in 2021, has an area of 7,190 square meters and is paved with granite. It serves as a venue for many provincial and national cultural and artistic events and has a capacity of around 10,000 people.
The Asian Townscape Award, established in 2010, aims to honor cities, regions, and projects that contribute significantly to landscape construction. The awarded projects are recognized for being environmentally friendly, safe, and sustainable, as well as respectful of local culture and history. They are expected to have high artistic quality and contribute to the development of the region while serving as models for other cities.
The Nghinh Phong Tower Square project will have a lifespan of 100 years, and its main material is granite.
