Vietnamese Shooter Takes Home Gold in Asian Games in China

On Thursday, Vietnam's Pham Quang Huy celebrated a historic victory at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, taking home the first gold medal for the country in the men's 10-meter air pistol event.

Huy achieved an impressive score of 240.5 points in the final, securing the top position on the podium. Lee Wonho of South Korea took silver with 239.4 points, while Vladimir Svechnikov of Uzbekistan earned bronze with 219.9 points.

The final started with two five-shot series, with a 250-second limit per series. After that, the contestants fired single shots, with a 50-second limit per shot. After every two shots, the lowest-ranked shooter was eliminated. Following the 12th shot and the 14th shot, the bottom two shooters were eliminated to take eighth and seventh place, respectively. The bronze medalist was determined by the 22nd shot, and the gold and silver medalists were decided by the final, 24th shot.

Huy and Lee were the last two men standing, with the Vietnamese shooter leading by 0.6 points. Lee closed the gap with the 23rd shot by hitting 10.1 points, while Huy managed 9.9 points. With the final shot, Huy gave Lee a bit of an opening by hitting 9.7. A score of 10.2 points or higher would have completed an unlikely comeback for Lee, but the South Korean only hit 9.0 points to take silver.

In another commendable achievement, Huy and his two teammates — Lai Cong Minh and Phan Cong Minh — had secured the bronze medal in the men’s 10m air pistol team event earlier on the same day.

On Wednesday afternoon, wushu athletes Duong Thuy Vi, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, and Hua Van Doan earned the bronze medals in women’s all-round jianshu & qiangshu, women’s 60kg, and men’s 56kg events, respectively. In taekwondo, Bac Thi Khiem nabbed the bronze medal in the women’s 67kg category.

The new medals sent Vietnam to the 14th spot in the rankings, where host China is leading with a dominant count of 81 gold medals, 44 silvers, and 24 bronzes, followed by South Korea with 19 gold medals, 19 silvers, and 35 bronzes and Japan with 15 gold medals, 27 silvers, and 24 bronzes as of 1:00 pm on Thursday.

Vietnam dispatched a delegation of 504 participants and coaches, including 320 athletes, to the 19th Asian Games, which feature a total of 40 sports and 481 events, with a target of winning at least two gold medals before the tournament concludes on October 8.
