Van Thuong and Cuban Legislature Leader Engage in Talks
On September 25, President Vo Van Thuong of Vietnam commenced his five-day official visit to the People's Power of Cuba with a meeting with President of the National Assembly (NA) Esteban Lazo Hernandez.
Hernandez is scheduled to attend a ceremony celebrating 50 years since Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s trip to the liberated zone in Southern Vietnam, which took place in September 1973.
Cuba became the first Latin American country to set up diplomatic ties with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on December 2, 1960.
50 years ago in mid-September 1973, Cuban Commander-in-chief Fidel Castro comes to Vietnam to visit the frontline zone in Quang Tri, with the wish of witnessing himself the fierce battlefield and the brave struggle by the Vietnamese people, as well as meeting with the people and soldiers in South Vietnam. He became the first and only foreign head of state to visit the liberated zone in South Vietnam whilst the war was still taking place.
