Liem has achieved a remarkable advancement in the world rankings, jumping from 21st to 15th place with an impressive Elo rating of 2,740.
This milestone represents the highest ranking he has ever reached in his career, surpassing all previous achievements in Vietnamese chess history.
His exceptional performance in the Grandmaster Triathlon championship at the Biel Chess Festival 2023, held in Switzerland from July 15 to 30, allowed him to gain an additional 11.8 Elo points. Despite facing tough competition from talented players such as Yu Yangyi, David Navara, Arjun Erigaisi, and Vincent Keymer, Liem showcased his skills and secured remarkable results.
During the tournament, Liem excelled in the classical time control event, achieving four wins, two draws, and only one loss. Notably, his victory against the renowned Chinese grandmaster Yu Yangyi earned him an impressive 5.1 Elo points.
Just before participating in the intense chess battles at the 2023 FIDE World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, Liem received the delightful news of his global promotion. Starting on Sunday and concluding on August 24, this prestigious championship features some of the world’s best players. As the 15th seed, Liem received a first-round bye and is now set to face Serbian player Ivan Ivanisevic in the second round.
In the FIDE women’s rankings, Pham Le Thao Nguyen holds the 78th position globally, boasting an Elo rating of 2,370 and cementing her status as Vietnam’s top female chess player. Vo Thi Kim Phung follows closely behind, ranking 95th in the world with an Elo rating of 2,351.
