Nguyen Hoang Dao, the secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union chapter in Ca Mau, announced on Monday that nearly 1,000 children have enrolled in the 32 free swimming courses available this summer in Ca Mau.
Located in the vibrant Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, Ca Mau is known for its intricate network of rivers and waterways. However, the province faces a significant shortage of swimming pools, leading to a concerning lack of vital swimming abilities, especially among the young population.
“We are committed to providing swimming lessons for children in our local community this summer,” stated Dao.
“In locations lacking swimming facilities, the Youth Union members have been providing swimming lessons in natural bodies of water such as rivers and shrimp ponds.”
He further stated that his organization conducted safety assessments on the shrimp ponds prior to utilizing them as improvised swimming facilities.

Lieu Bich Tien, a resident of Nguyen Huan Commune in Dam Doi District, expressed her gratitude for the swimming lessons. She acknowledged that she lacked swimming skills herself and, as a result, was unable to teach her children how to stay safe in water.
Tien expressed her concerns regarding the safety of her children on a daily basis, due to living in this region primarily dominated by rivers.
“I am delighted that my children have the opportunity to learn how to swim at no cost, all thanks to the generosity of the Youth Union members.”
The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union chapter has partnered with various organizations to provide a range of summer activities and free swimming courses. In addition, they have generously donated life jackets to local children, amounting to a significant contribution worth VND300 million ($12,625).
In addition, they have introduced a new program designed for children and their parents to enhance their water safety knowledge and develop essential drowning prevention skills.
