Russian Cyclist Strengthens Grip on Vietnamese National Race
On Friday, Russian cyclist Petr Rikunov of the Tap Doan Loc Troi team took the win in the 11th stage of the 2023 Ho Chi Minh City TV (HTV) Cup tournament, crossing the finish line without any competition from other racers.
The race, deemed one of the most challenging stages of this year’s tournament, saw 98 riders traverse nearly 170 kilometers from Quy Nhon City in south-central Binh Dinh Province to Pleiku City in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai. The journey included conquering two mountain passes, An Khe and Mang Yang, making it a grueling experience for the participants.
Determined to widen his overall time gap with other competitors, Rikunov was part of a breakaway that included Igor Frolov of the Ho Chi Minh City-Vinama team, Vladislav Duiunov of Ho Chi Minh City-New Group, Javier Sarda Perez of Nhua Binh Minh Binh Duong, and Loic Desriac of Duoc Domesco Dong Thap after the first 50 kilometers.
Frolov and Duiunov mounted an assault in an attempt to break away from the other three who were part of the quintet.
With support from Frolov, Duiunov continued their journey alone and eventually reached the summit of An Khe Mountain Pass first.

After that, Rikunov and Frolov caught up with Duiunov and took the lead of the race, sticking together and leaving an impressive gap of more than five minutes between them and the chasers.

With less than 10 kilometers remaining, Rikunov made a bold move and surged ahead of Frolov to take the lead. His decisive attack proved successful, and he now had the advantage.
During the efforts to draw level with Rikunov, Frolov suffered a flat tire four kilometers from the finish line. Unfortunately, this caused him to lose the race.
As the starting gun sounded, Rikunov sprinted off the blocks and quickly established a commanding lead. His steady pace and tireless determination carried him to the finish line in Pleiku City, where he crossed it first, alone.
This is his fifth stage win in the tourney.
More than 1 minute and 30 seconds later, Frolov arrived, clinching the runner-up spot in the 11th stage.
The victory in Pleiku helped Rikunov strengthen his grip on both the most prestigious yellow and blue jerseys, which are awarded to the riders leading the time trial and the points classification.
Frolov is currently firmly in control of the red polka dot jersey for the rider who has collected the most mountain points.
