Hung’s love of reading began when he was a young child. As he grew, so did his love for books, until it became a passion that he carries with him to this day.

It was not until after he graduated from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi with a degree in journalism and media studies that Duong Lieu, his very own passion project, was born. With a desire to share his knowledge and experience, he created Duong Lieu, a platform to provide informative articles and helpful advice to its readers. His work has been met with great success, inspiring and helping many people to make positive changes in their lives.

Duong Lieu opened a private library in his living room to create a safe space for local children to explore the captivating world of literature. He envisioned a place where young minds could be inspired and discover the joy of reading. From books to magazines, his library provides a wide range of materials that encourage young readers to explore the wonders of the written word. Not only does his library offer a safe haven for children, but it also serves as a social gathering place where they can come together to share their love of reading. It is Duong’s wish to bring the power of literature to his community and inspire the next generation of readers.

When Hung, 33, launched Duong Lieu in 2013, the few private libraries that existed in his Hanoian neighborhood were managed almost exclusively by retired teachers, veterans, and the elderly. These individuals had dedicated their time and effort to creating a space of knowledge and learning for the local community. Despite their best efforts, however, these libraries often lacked the resources and funding necessary to make them truly successful. Hung saw this as an opportunity to create something special and, with the help of a small team of volunteers, he established Duong Lieu, a library designed to provide the community with a much-needed source of educational resources.

While these libraries were appreciated by many, they were not particularly accessible or child-friendly.

My expertise in journalism and media has been invaluable in helping me to publicize my library on various social media platforms. I am receiving a lot of attention and have been presented with unbeatable chances to expand,” Hung declared.

Duong Lieu is a safe haven for readers to come and explore, but it’s also the home of Hung and a dedicated team of volunteers. Here, they are able to engage in a range of meaningful and interesting activities, such as WeWatch and WeHere. Whether it’s for learning, entertainment, or just to bring people together, these initiatives allow them to make a positive impact on the world.

WeWatch is an innovative educational project that uses films as a medium to educate and empower young readers. Our goal is to create a safe and stimulating environment where students can learn, explore, and grow. By introducing them to the power of film, we aim to help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. We provide an array of resources, including films, activities, and discussion materials, to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. With our unique approach, we strive to help students become confident, creative, and engaged global citizens.

WeHere is an informative interaction platform, events, and activities provider for teens and young adults aged 10 to 24 to help them with their mental health. Our platform offers support, advice, and resources to help young people make informed decisions about their wellbeing. We provide a safe and secure online environment for young people to interact with peers, access helpful information, and find support for their mental health struggles. Our events and activities are tailored to the age and stage of development of the young people we serve, helping them to build a foundation of resilience and self-awareness. We strive to foster an environment of understanding, acceptance, and respect, and to be a source of hope for young people and their families.

Super Creative, an innovative program at Duong Lieu, is designed to help elementary and middle school students develop their skills in crafting unique toys and other handicrafts. With the help of experienced instructors, students can learn the basics of crafting and create beautiful works of art that they can be proud of! The program offers a great opportunity for children to hone their creative skills and explore their artistic potential. Through hands-on activities, students will be able to bring their ideas to life and learn the fundamentals of crafting. With Super Creative, children can develop their creative talents and practice their craft in an enjoyable and safe environment.

“What brings me the most satisfaction is the fact that Duong Lieu Library has been able to draw in so many passionate young people to become part of our community projects,” Hung stated joyfully.

A Local Library Network

Providing access to books and other resources, a local library network is an invaluable asset to any community. By offering a variety of services and materials, a local library network can offer educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities to its members. The library network typically consists of multiple libraries located in different areas, all connected to a central system. This system allows patrons to access books, magazines, audio recordings, and other materials from any library in the network.

Additionally, a library network offers patrons access to computers and the internet, providing a valuable resource for research and communication. Patrons can access their library accounts online, allowing them to search for books and other materials, place holds, and renew items from the comfort of their own home. Many library networks also offer other services such as movie nights, storytime, and author talks.

The library network is an invaluable resource for any community, offering access to knowledge and resources that would otherwise be inaccessible. With its wide range of services and materials, a local library network is an invaluable asset to any community.

In addition to the Duong Lieu Library, Hung has found another way to share his love of reading: Local Bookable, a project he launched in 2019. Through this platform, Hung connects local readers with books from nearby independent bookstores, giving them access to an ever-expanding selection of literature. By doing so, Hung hopes to encourage more people to discover the joys of reading and to support their local bookstores.

Via Local Bookable, he mentors other young people on how to set up their own local community libraries.

The Three-Root Library in Dan Phuong District, Hanoi, has been one of the many beneficiaries of the Local Bookable project. The library offers a wide range of books, magazines, and other reading materials for the public to enjoy. It also provides computers with internet access and other services to support local literacy and education initiatives. With the help of the Local Bookable project, the library has been able to expand its collection, making it more accessible to the local community.

The Local Bookable project has enabled the Three-Root Library to grow its collection to meet the demands of the local community. With an ever-growing collection, the library can offer a variety of reading materials for all ages. The library also provides access to computers with internet access, which can be used for researching and learning. Furthermore, the library offers a range of educational and literacy initiatives, such as providing educational resources to local schools and offering workshops for local adults.

According to Tran Thi Ngoc Thuy, the founder of Three-Root, Hung and Local Bookable were instrumental in addressing challenges related to human resources, book procurement, book organization, book codes, and other library-related matters. Their efforts were crucial in helping to resolve these issues.

“When I first encountered Hung, he appeared to be a man of few words,” Thuy remembered fondly.

However, after working for a considerable period of time, I noticed that he was truly passionate about library development.

Hung is eager to share his experience openly and honestly. He wants everyone to benefit from the knowledge he has gained over the years. He is willing to divulge all the information he has, without holding anything back.

He desires that recently established libraries thrive, so he can keep on promoting the reading culture.

In addition to collaborating with other libraries, Hung is also partnering with local schools to implement student-focused initiatives. By doing so, he is helping to create a more engaging and enriching learning environment for students.

According to Nguyen Thi Huong, General Manager of Duong Lieu Middle School in Hanoi, Hung has been instrumental in developing programming that allows students to apply the lessons they have studied in textbooks to real-world scenarios.

One of these programs includes having students read a book about the environment and then launching the ‘Month of Action for a Green Duong Lieu,’ which called on local families to take action against littering.

The Search for Knowledge: A Core Part of Human Nature

Exploring and learning have been part of humanity since the dawn of time. From early hunter-gatherers to modern scientists, humans have sought to gain knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The search for knowledge is a fundamental part of human nature, and it has driven us to discover new concepts, technologies, and ways of thinking.

From the invention of the wheel to the development of complex mathematical algorithms, our pursuit of knowledge has enabled us to make tremendous advances in the way we live, work, and interact with one another. Our knowledge has also allowed us to understand and appreciate our environment, helping us to develop sustainable practices and solutions to pressing global challenges.

The search for knowledge is an ongoing journey, and it is one that continues to fascinate and challenge us. As we strive to expand our understanding of the universe, we can take comfort in the knowledge that our pursuit of knowledge is deeply rooted in our humanity.

While library science is relatively limited in Vietnam, American universities offer students a range of opportunities to focus on various sub-specialties within the field. By specializing in a particular area, students can gain valuable knowledge and skills that can be applied to a variety of library-related contexts. Furthermore, many American universities provide students with access to cutting-edge technology and resources that can help them further their research and studies. Ultimately, library science programs in the U.S. offer students a comprehensive education in the field, allowing them to pursue their interests and gain the expertise necessary to become successful in the field.

While studying in the United States, Hung hopes to direct his library science studies towards teenagers and children. This focus will enable him to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of this particular demographic and help him to better serve them in the future. Hung believes that by taking the time to understand the challenges that these young people face, he can develop innovative solutions to improve the way they engage with libraries and access the resources they need.

Traditional libraries are not just places to read and borrow books; they can also be places to explore culture and take part in a range of programming. He went on to note that future libraries will put an even greater emphasis on these activities.

“I am eager to discover how I can transform a library into a true cultural and intellectual hub for the local community,” Hung remarked.

Phung Ba Hung has recently been honored as one of the recipients of the prestigious Fulbright Master’s Program Scholarship. This scholarship will enable Hung to further his commitment to promoting reading in his native Vietnam.

Hung’s passion for reading began when he was a child.

It was while studying at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Vietnam, that Duong Lieu found his passion for journalism and media studies. After graduating, he decided to take the knowledge he had acquired and share it with the world, launching the Duong Lieu platform.

Duong Lieu has opened a private library in his living room, creating a safe and welcoming space for the children in the neighborhood to immerse themselves in the captivating world of literature. Here, they can discover the joy of reading and explore the fascinating stories hidden within each page. This library serves as a refuge for the young minds, providing a sanctuary for them to escape the monotony of everyday life and experience the wonders of the literary world.

When Hung, 33, launched Duong Lieu in 2013, the few private libraries that existed in his Hanoian neighborhood were mostly managed by retired teachers, veterans, and the elderly. He wanted to create a space that was not only a repository of knowledge but also a safe haven for people to explore, learn, and grow.

While these libraries were appreciated by many, they were not particularly user-friendly or suitable for children.

My knowledge of journalism and media has really aided me in disseminating information about my library to a wide audience through various social networks. This has generated a lot of interest and enabled me to seize opportunities to grow and develop further,” Hung remarked.

Duong Lieu is more than just a safe space to read; it is the headquarters of Hung and his volunteer army, who use the space to engage in meaningful and interesting activities like WeWatch and WeHere. Here, they can access resources, collaborate on projects, and work together to create positive change. With its wide range of activities and resources, Duong Lieu is the perfect place for those looking to make a difference.

We strive to create a community of understanding and acceptance where everyone feels safe and free to express themselves. WeHere is committed to helping young people take control of their mental health and find the strength and resilience to live life to the fullest.

Super Creative, another program at Duong Lieu, is designed to help elementary and middle school students to develop their craftsmanship skills by teaching them how to make toys and other handmade items. The program provides an interactive and fun learning environment that encourages students to learn how to create exciting and imaginative works of art. All the materials and tools used are of the highest quality, ensuring that the students have a safe and enjoyable experience. With experienced staff and knowledgeable instructors, Super Creative helps students to explore their creativity and develop their skills in a fun and engaging way.

“I’m immensely proud that the Duong Lieu Library has been able to draw in so many passionate and engaged young people to get involved in our communal initiatives,” Hung revealed with enthusiasm.

A local library network can be an invaluable resource for the community. It can provide access to books, magazines, and videos, as well as educational and recreational activities. Libraries can also offer free Wi-Fi, computer access, and other technology services. Libraries are a great place to meet people and build relationships with other members of the community. They can also host reading groups, book clubs, discussion groups, and workshops to help people learn new skills. For those who need extra help with their studies, many libraries also provide tutoring services. By joining a local library network, members can connect with others and gain access to a wealth of resources.

In addition to Duong Lieu Library, Hung has also demonstrated his love of reading by launching Local Bookable, a project he initiated in 2019. This project offers locals access to a wide selection of books, helping them to discover new texts and further their knowledge.

Via Local Bookable, he teaches other young people how to establish private community libraries that are accessible and bookable locally. Through his expertise, these budding library owners can provide educational, cultural, and recreational resources to their communities.

The Three-Root Library in Dan Phuong District, Hanoi, is one of the many beneficiaries of the Local Bookable project. This library has seen great success since the project’s implementation, offering a wide variety of books and resources to its patrons.

The Local Bookable project was introduced to the Three-Root Library in order to provide affordable access to a broad selection of literature and educational resources. Through this project, patrons have access to a wealth of books, magazines, and other materials that were otherwise unavailable.

The Three-Root Library is now a hub of activity, with patrons of all ages and backgrounds taking advantage of the resources available to them. The library also offers other services such as free computer access, tutoring, and even free community events. The library is truly a vital part of the local community.

The Local Bookable project has been a great success for the Three-Root Library and the Dan Phuong District. It has made a huge difference in the lives of those who use the library, providing an invaluable resource that would otherwise be inaccessible. It has also helped to create a sense of community and camaraderie among library patrons.

“When I first encountered Hung, he appeared to be a man of few words,” Thuy fondly remembered.

After working for a long time, I could see that my colleague was extremely passionate about library development. He was highly motivated and showed dedication to the task at hand. I was truly impressed by his enthusiasm and commitment.

Hung is eager to share his experience openly and honestly. He is not afraid to show his true colors and is willing to be open and transparent about what he has learned. He is eager to be of help to anyone who may benefit from his knowledge.

He is passionate about ensuring that newly-established libraries thrive and succeed, so that he can continue to foster a culture of reading throughout society.

Aside from collaborating with other libraries, Hung also works hard to implement student-centered programs in local schools. He is committed to providing educational opportunities that will shape the lives of young people in his community. Hung is dedicated to creating an environment that encourages learning and growth, and his efforts have resulted in a number of successful initiatives.
