Hung’s love of reading began when he was a young child. As he grew, so did his love for books, until it became a passion that he carries with him to this day.

It was not until after he graduated from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi with a degree in journalism and media studies that Duong Lieu, his very own passion project, was born. With a desire to share his knowledge and experience, he created Duong Lieu, a platform to provide informative articles and helpful advice to its readers. His work has been met with great success, inspiring and helping many people to make positive changes in their lives.

Duong Lieu opened a private library in his living room to create a safe space for local children to explore the captivating world of literature. He envisioned a place where young minds could be inspired and discover the joy of reading. From books to magazines, his library provides a wide range of materials that encourage young readers to explore the wonders of the written word. Not only does his library offer a safe haven for children, but it also serves as a social gathering place where they can come together to share their love of reading. It is Duong’s wish to bring the power of literature to his community and inspire the next generation of readers.

When Hung, 33, launched Duong Lieu in 2013, the few private libraries that existed in his Hanoian neighborhood were managed almost exclusively by retired teachers, veterans, and the elderly. These individuals had dedicated their time and effort to creating a space of knowledge and learning for the local community. Despite their best efforts, however, these libraries often lacked the resources and funding necessary to make them truly successful. Hung saw this as an opportunity to create something special and, with the help of a small team of volunteers, he established Duong Lieu, a library designed to provide the community with a much-needed source of educational resources.

While these libraries were appreciated by many, they were not particularly accessible or child-friendly.

My expertise in journalism and media has been invaluable in helping me to publicize my library on various social media platforms. I am receiving a lot of attention and have been presented with unbeatable chances to expand,” Hung declared.

Duong Lieu is a safe haven for readers to come and explore, but it’s also the home of Hung and a dedicated team of volunteers. Here, they are able to engage in a range of meaningful and interesting activities, such as WeWatch and WeHere. Whether it’s for learning, entertainment, or just to bring people together, these initiatives allow them to make a positive impact on the world.

By introducing them to the power of film, we aim to help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. We provide an array of resources, including films, activities, and discussion materials, to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. With our unique approach, we strive to help students become confident, creative, and engaged global citizens.

WeHere is an informative interaction platform, events, and activities provider for teens and young adults aged 10 to 24 to help them with their mental health. Our platform offers support, advice, and resources to help young people make informed decisions about their wellbeing. We provide a safe and secure online environment for young people to interact with peers, access helpful information, and find support for their mental health struggles. Our events and activities are tailored to the age and stage of development of the young people we serve, helping them to build a foundation of resilience and self-awareness. We strive to foster an environment of understanding, acceptance, and respect, and to be a source of hope for young people and their families.

Super Creative, an innovative program at Duong Lieu, is designed to help elementary and middle school students develop their skills in crafting unique toys and other handicrafts. With the help of experienced instructors, students can learn the basics of crafting and create beautiful works of art that they can be proud of! The program offers a great opportunity for children to hone their creative skills and explore their artistic potential. Through hands-on activities, students will be able to bring their ideas to life and learn the fundamentals of crafting. With Super Creative, children can develop their creative talents and practice their craft in an enjoyable and safe environment.

“What brings me the most satisfaction is the fact that Duong Lieu Library has been able to draw in so many passionate young people to become part of our community projects,” Hung stated joyfully.

A Local Library Network

This focus will enable him to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of this particular demographic and help him to better serve them in the future. Hung believes that by taking the time to understand the challenges that these young people face, he can develop innovative solutions to improve the way they engage with libraries and access the resources they need.

Traditional libraries are not just places to read and borrow books; they can also be places to explore culture and take part in a range of programming. He went on to note that future libraries will put an even greater emphasis on these activities.

“I am eager to discover how I can transform a library into a true cultural and intellectual hub for the local community,” Hung remarked.
