Darwin Nunez and Uruguay put on a clinic against Bolivia, with a commanding 5-0 victory. Nunez, Facundo Pellistri, Maximiliano Araujo, Federico Valverde, and substitute Rodrigo Bentancur all found the back of the net in a dominant display.

It took just eight minutes for Pellistri to open the scoring, nodding home from a well-worked set piece. Nunez then continued his rich vein of form, scoring in his seventh consecutive international match. The forward instinctively finished over Bolivia keeper Guillermo Viscarra’s right shoulder to double Uruguay’s lead.

With a comfortable advantage, Uruguay took their foot off the gas at the start of the second half. However, they soon found their rhythm again, and Araujo struck from close range in the 77th minute to put the game out of reach. Federico Valverde added a fourth just minutes later, and Bentancur headed home his first touch of the game to complete the rout in the 89th minute.

With this win, Uruguay are in a strong position to progress as group winners. Avoiding defeat in their final group game against the United States will secure top spot. Meanwhile, Bolivia faces an uphill battle, needing a miracle to avoid exiting at the group stage for the fourth consecutive time.

The night also marked a special moment for Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, Luis Suarez. Coming on as a late substitute, Suarez was immediately handed the captain’s armband, underlining his enduring legacy for La Celeste.
