Drivers were entertained as they watched the monitor lizard, a common sight in Singapore, suddenly sprint away. The lizard had casually wandered onto the circuit at the start of the daylight session, but when the chase began, it reacted with a burst of speed.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, along with his teammate Lance Stroll, were the only ones on the track at that moment. They were alerted to the lizard’s dangerous stroll in the final sector, which could have ended disastrously.
Over team radio, Alonso was informed, “We’ve been notified that the track is clear, but keep an eye out for a lizard.” The Spaniard, ever vigilant, responded, “It’s right in the middle of the track,” as he skillfully maneuvered around it and headed back to the pit lane.
Sky television commentator David Croft nicknamed the lizard Larry, humorously comparing its purposeful stride to that of Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll.
The practice session was briefly interrupted but soon resumed, with the drivers now more aware of the unexpected challenges that Singapore’s wildlife can present.
Lizards have been a recurring hazard at this Grand Prix; Max Verstappen’s Red Bull race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, famously dubbed a large lizard “Godzilla” back in 2016. When a smaller lizard appeared during practice last year, Lambiase quipped, “Maybe Godzilla started a family.”
According to the National Parks Board of Singapore, monitor lizards are typically shy and reclusive unless they feel cornered. Fortunately, they are also diurnal, sleeping at night, which is a relief for the organizers of this night race, ensuring that the lizards won’t be a concern during the main event.
