Manchester United suffered another disappointing defeat as Crystal Palace secured a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Arsenal moved within one point of the top of the table after a comfortable 4-0 win against Bournemouth.
Prior to this match, Manchester City had won all six of their opening games as they aim to become the first team in history to win four consecutive English top-flight titles. However, Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had only gathered four points from their first six games, shocked the champions with a 2-1 victory at Molineux.
Ruben Dias’ own goal initially put Wolves in the lead, but Julian Alvarez’s free-kick brought City level. In the end, it was Hwang Hee-chan who secured the win for Wolves with a goal 25 minutes from time. Pep Guardiola, City’s manager, admitted that his team did not perform to their best despite the result.
Liverpool had a chance to go top of the table with a victory, but they faced an uphill battle when Curtis Jones was sent off in the 26th minute for a dangerous challenge. Despite falling to ten men, Son Heung-min scored for Tottenham Hotspur, but Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool before halftime. Liverpool’s task became even harder when Diogo Jota received two quick yellow cards, leaving them with nine men. The game ended in dramatic fashion when Joel Matip scored an own goal in injury time, giving Tottenham a 2-1 win and pushing them above Liverpool into second place.
On the other hand, Manchester United had their worst ever start to a Premier League season, sitting in 10th place after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace. Aston Villa had a dominant performance against Brighton, winning 6-1, with Ollie Watkins scoring a hat-trick. This victory moved Villa ahead of Brighton into fifth place on goal difference. Luton also celebrated their first-ever Premier League win with a 2-1 victory against Everton. Sheffield United remained at the bottom after a 2-0 loss to West Ham, with Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio finding the back of the net for the Hammers.
