Ho Chi Minh City hosted the Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony of the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2022 on September 7, launched to acknowledge excellence in the travel and tourism industry.

Vietnam’s capital city – Hanoi won Asia’s Leading City Break Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2022 – Region: Asia & Oceania while Ho Chi Minh City won Asia Leading Business Travel Destination.

The category evaluates the attractiveness of short leisure vacations and urban experience of Asia cities. The results were based on votes cast by travel industry professionals and the public, organizers said.

In addition to Hanoi, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines won the titles of Asia’s Leading Airline – Economy Class and Asia’s Leading Airline Brand this year, while Vietravel Airlines was accredited as Asia’s Leading New Airline.

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism won Asia’s Leading City Tourist Board 2022, beating tough contestants such as Hong Kong Tourism Board and Jakarta Tourism.

The Ville De Mont Mountain Resort in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai’s Sa Pa town and Premier Village Ha Long Bay Resort in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh won Asia’s Leading Lifestyle Resort and Asia’s Leading Family Villa Resort 2022, respectively.

Led by a staff made up of 90 % Indigenous people, the Ville De Mont Mountain Resort (Sapa) designs guests’ stay to coexist with the local culture and forest biome. Double-bed room prices range from VND 11,000,000 to 20,000,000 per night (US $467 – 850 per night).

Attending the award ceremony were Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT); Mr. Ha Van Sieu, VNAT’s Vice Chairman; Ms. Phan Thi Thang, Vice Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

Last year, Vietnam won the title of Asia’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards, and was honoured Vietnam as Asia’s Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination, and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism as Asia’s Leading Tourist Board 2021.

The WTA was launched in 1993 to acknowledge excellence in the travel and tourism industry. Heralded as the “travel industry’s equivalent of the Oscars” by the Wall Street Journal. Each year, WTA covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognise and celebrate individual and collective success within each key geographical region.

Under the theme “Southern Journey”, the WTA gala 2022 welcomes over 1,500 representatives from management agencies, travel companies, airlines, and operators of accommodation and entertainment facilities in Vietnam and abroad.This is the second time Vietnam has played host to the Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony, with Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island off the southern province of Kien Giang, selected as the venue in 2019.
