The 33rd Food Expo of Hong Kong opened on Thursday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, showcasing the latest culinary trends from 20 countries and regions. The event, which is the first fair since the Covid-19 pandemic, features cooking demonstrations, master classes, seminars, and celebrity chefs.
Several Vietnamese specialties are on display at the Hong Kong Food Expo 2023, which is taking place from August 17-21, according to VNA. This is the first time that the Vietnam Cashew Nut Processing Technology Joint Stock Company CPT, based in Binh Phuoc province, is participating in this fair. The company hopes to expand its export market and increase its factory’s capacity, creating more employment opportunities for local farmers and workers.

Vu Thi Thuy, head of the Vietnam Trade Office in Hong Kong, stated that Vietnamese businesses are interested in the Hong Kong market and are introducing their products to the regional market. The Consulate General in Hong Kong has a booth at the Food Expo every year to showcase typical Vietnamese products. The Trade Office encourages Vietnamese businesses to send samples and catalogs of their products for exhibition.
Hong Kong Food Expo 2023 is one of the five trade fairs opened on August 17 by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The event features over 1,800 exhibitors from 24 countries and territories worldwide and includes the Home Delights Expo, Beauty & Wellness Expo, and Hong Kong International Tea Fair. The Food Expo, as one of the most important events in the food industry in Hong Kong, aims to facilitate exchanges between leading food exporters and importers and provide opportunities for market research.

Vietnam has consistently been one of the top 10 largest trading partners of Hong Kong. Trade between Vietnam and Hong Kong has been growing at a rate of 11.8% each year from 2017 to 2021. In 2021 alone, the trade value reached HKD 220 billion (USD 28.1 billion), a 19% year-on-year increase. However, the total import-export turnover between the two sides in 2022 neared USD 10.9 billion, a 6% decrease compared to 2021. In the first three months of 2023, the trade turnover reached USD 2.5 billion, down 28% from the same period last year.
In April, a conference was held in Hong Kong to strengthen relations between Vietnamese and Hong Kong rice businesses and promote high-quality Vietnamese rice in the market. Hong Kong is one of the traditional niche markets for Vietnamese specialty rice, with stable purchasing power over the years. By the end of March 2023, Vietnam exported more than 16,000 tonnes of rice to Hong Kong, a similar amount to the same period last year.
