Celebrating Hanoi’s 60th Liberation Day: The 4th Dragon Dance Festival

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2014), the 4th Dragon Dance Festival took place in front of the majestic statue of King Ly Thai To in Chi Linh Park, Hanoi. This vibrant festival showcased captivating dragon dances, each infused with the rich cultural heritage of the 1000-year-old Thang Long – Hanoi.

The dragon dance, rooted in the Thang Long (flying dragon) legend, dates back to 1010 when King Ly Thai To relocated the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi). This ancient art form symbolizes the aspirations of the people for peace and prosperity. For the fourth time, Hanoi hosted this festival to honor the timeless traditions of the millennium capital.

The 4th Dragon Dance Festival featured 25 dragon dance troupes from all 25 districts of Hanoi. Each troupe presented unique performances with diverse themes, such as “An Duong Vuong Builds Co Loa Citadel” by Dong Anh Troupe, “Changing with the Dragon’s Direction” by Chuong My Troupe, and “Flying Dragon in Phu Dong” by Gia Lam Troupe. These performances left the audience in awe with their visual splendor.
