THE HANOI TIMES — On December 5, Hanoi Metro officially launched an advanced automated fare-collection (AFC) system on the Cat Linh–Ha Dong urban railway line. This innovative system integrates digital identity, electronic authentication, biometric recognition, and cashless payment, marking a significant leap forward for Hanoi’s public transportation network.
This milestone underscores Hanoi’s commitment to building a modern, smart, and eco-friendly mobility ecosystem, setting a new standard for urban transit in the city.

In collaboration with Visa and Thang Long Software, Hanoi Metro has upgraded critical infrastructure, including management software, data servers, multi-standard readers, and gate-control circuits. These enhancements ensure seamless and secure operations on both the Cat Linh–Ha Dong and Nhon–Hanoi Railway Station routes.
A full-line pilot launched on August 20 attracted nearly 71,000 registered users and over 344,000 transactions. Positive feedback paved the way for a successful transition to the new system, completed on November 18, 2025.
Khuat Viet Hung, Chairman of Hanoi Metro’s Member Council, emphasized the company’s commitment to system safety and maximizing the utilization of existing AFC infrastructure.
Hanoi Metro prioritizes open, interoperable, and domestically-driven technology solutions. This approach fosters digital transformation, reduces operational costs, strengthens governance, and enhances passenger convenience.
Key upgrades include the installation of multi-standard readers and AI cameras, enhanced gate-control circuits, expanded servers, and robust cybersecurity measures. The AFC system is seamlessly integrated with the RAR Center via the Hanoi Metro App and synchronized with VNeID for ticket data.
Passengers can now purchase tickets on VNeID and the mobile app using QR codes, NFC, or chip-based IDs. The system also supports biometric recognition and Tap-and-Go cashless payments, offering unparalleled convenience.
Looking ahead, Hanoi Metro will integrate the system with VNeID, the National Ticketing Platform, and the Ministry of Public Security’s Transport Hub. Phase 2, targeting eight stations on the Nhon–Hanoi Railway Station line, will commence after the warranty period ends on December 16, 2025.

Hardware upgrades will be tested from December 25 to 31, 2025. By January 1, 2026, the system will operate through 30% of fare gates, scaling up to full operation by February 2026 following the completion of all upgrades by January 31, 2026.
This rollout signifies a transformative step toward a modern, efficient, and passenger-centric public transport system in Hanoi. It not only enhances the passenger experience but also optimizes operational efficiency.
According to Hung, the integration of digital identity, electronic authentication, and biometric technologies will elevate operational efficiency while providing passengers with a safer, more convenient, and environmentally sustainable service.
Since its inception, Hanoi Metro has safely operated over 424,000 passenger-carrying train trips and served more than 53.2 million passengers across its two metro lines, maintaining an impeccable safety record throughout its operations.
