Hanoi Hosts Launch of Asia’s First Climate Entrepreneurship Hub

Special Representative for Global Partnerships at the US Department of State, Dorothy McAuliffe, celebrated the momentum of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States, as she announced the launch of the Coalition for Climate Entrepreneurship (CCE Hub) in Hanoi. This event was made possible by President Biden's recent visit to the nation.

The U.S. Department of State, Vietnam’s Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT), VMO Holdings Technology Joint Stock Company (VMO), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and launched the Coalition for Climate Entrepreneurship (CCE Hub) on September 27, 2023.

With the signing and launching ceremony of the CCE Hub, the parties agreed to collaborate in promoting startup activities in the field of climate change. This collaboration will utilize startup resources and technology to minimize climate change and foster economic growth with clean energy sources. The event was attended by representatives of the signees, as well as leaders from the Ministry of Information and Communications, Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Natural Resources Environment, National Innovation Center, and businesses in the field of IC Design.

Dorothy McAuliffe, Special Representative for Global Partnerships in the United States Department of State, expressed, “The U.S. State Department, along with our hosting and implementing partners, are prepared to use this hub in the coming years to identify sustainability-focused entrepreneurs, convene them here in this space, and equip them with the tools and resources they need to scale climate solutions to market. We are confident this hub will build upon the momentum of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership issued between Vietnam and the United States during President Biden’s recent visit as we work together to address the climate crisis.”

The Coalition for Climate Entrepreneurship (CCE) nurtures entrepreneurship focused on climate solutions by providing support through capital, capacity building, technical assistance, access to mentorship, and network building in the early and growth stages.

The CCE Hub Hanoi, located at PTIT, is an innovation space designed to provide a community space for founders and startups. The hub’s goal is to facilitate the creation of market-viable businesses that pioneer emerging sustainable solutions or innovate existing solutions. It focuses on sustainability, including clean energy, sustainable agriculture, climate finance, climate resilience and adaptation, and recovery projects.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Anh – Deputy Director of PTIT, shared his hopes for the CCE Hub, stating, “CCE Hub will create a dedicated creative space for creators and startups, focusing on sustainable research areas such as clean energy, sustainable agriculture, climate finance, climate resilience, and recovery projects. As the CCE Hub management unit in Vietnam, PTIT & VMO will strive to be a bridge between the business community and make practical contributions to the sustainable development of the environment, climate change, and community benefits.”

On September 10, the United States and Vietnam announced the U.S. – Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. President Biden applauded Vietnam’s climate commitments under its Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), as well as Vietnam’s 2050 net zero greenhouse emissions target. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong welcomed the U.S. contribution to mobilizing public and private financing for Vietnam’s JETP and cooperation with the international community to ensure its successful implementation while ensuring national energy sovereignty, security, and affordability. The United States committed to assisting Vietnam with both finance and advanced climate technology to fulfill its international climate commitments. Vietnam welcomes projects funded by international financial institutions, including the World Bank, in the areas of climate change response, energy transition, green growth, and renewable energy infrastructure.
