The central province of Quang Nam is scheduled to hold the first national Ngoc Linh ginseng festival in Nam Tra My district from August 1 – 3, VOV citied a recently issued statement.

Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis, or Vietnamese ginseng), a rare medical root containing 52 saponin compounds helpful to health, was found on Ngoc Linh Mountain on the boundary between Kon Tum and Quang Nam in the late 1960s.

Besides saponin, Ngoc Linh ginseng contains 17 amino acids, 20 trace minerals and 0.1% of attar. The ginseng has high effects in anti-stress and anti-aging conditions. It helps improve immunity, enhance liver function, and lower cholesterol. Besides, it also works well with antibiotics and diabetes medications.

Ngoc Linh ginseng is one of the world’s most precious ginsengs. It was approved as a national product under the Prime Minister’s Decision 787/QD-TTg dated June 5, 2017.

During the festival, the organizers plan to announce a decision to establish the Vietnam Ginseng Association, the Vietnam Ginseng Usage Day, and the National Ginseng Programme.

They will also host seminars on ginseng quality, ginseng heritage, ginseng security, as well as policies to develop national ginseng.

In addition, the organisers will launch a contest on Ngoc Linh ginseng on the Internet and a photo contest about Quang Nam’s medicinal herbs, coupled with a number of sport and tourism activities.

The first National Ginseng Festival is expected to popularize Ngoc Linh ginseng brand domestically and internationally, promote the value of Ngoc Linh ginseng (Vietnamese ginseng), and create a unique tourism product to attract tourists to Quang Nam.

The district of Nam Tra My has so far organized the Ngoc Linh ginseng festival four times on a local scale, attracting thousands of visitors to come and buy products.

In recent years, researchers have successfully embedded scientific methods into the growing process and received some promising initial results such as a higher percentage of new saplings and an increase in the number of grown ginseng roots, according to VNA.

Vietnam aims to increase total land usage for cultivating ginseng to 200,000ha in the provinces of Quang Nam, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Lai Chau, Kon Tum, Lao Cai and Gia Lai by 2030 and target specific regions to manufacture ingredients which will be used for producing ginseng products in the same area.

It is estimated that for an investment of about VND 3 billion (nearly USD 129,000) to grow one hectare of ginseng, revenue after five years can reach 30 billion VND (USD 1.27 million).

However, cultivating Ngoc Linh ginseng isn’t easy because the plant can only grow and produce quality ginseng in climatic and soil conditions at an altitude of 1,200-2,000m on Ngoc Linh mountain.

The plant was called a national treasure by President Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a Quang Nam seminar last month.
