Discover the timeless elegance of Van Phuc silk, a 1,000-year-old tradition that has captivated the world. This ancient Vietnamese village is renowned for its exquisite silk weaving, earning the title of the “oldest traditional silk-weaving village still in operation today” by the Vietnam Book of Records Center.
Van Phuc’s artisans, with their unparalleled skill and passion, create silk that embodies the essence of Vietnamese culture. The village boasts over 70 varieties of silk, including luxurious embroidered silk, satin, and chiffon, each adorned with unique patterns. From floral designs to the mesmerizing cloud silk, Van Phuc’s creations are a testament to its rich heritage.
Nguyen Van Khanh, Deputy Chairman of the Van Phuc ward People’s Committee, proudly shares, “Our signature cloud silk, featuring floating cloud patterns, once graced the Paris International Exhibition. We’ve also revived the lost art of Gam brocade, a testament to our dedication to preserving tradition.”
The World Crafts Council’s international jury was captivated by Van Phuc’s enduring legacy during their visit last October. Khanh reflects, “Being recognized as the 68th member of the World Craft Council is both an honor and a responsibility, opening doors to global recognition and cultural exchange.”
The jury praised the village’s artisans for their unwavering commitment to preserving traditional techniques while innovating. Artisans like Nguyen Thi Tam and Tran Thi Ngoc Lan exemplify this spirit, reviving ancient patterns and developing silk that resists wrinkles and fading, even automating parts of the weaving process.
Tam expresses her vision, “We aspire to collaborate globally, learning and creating silk that resonates with international trends while staying true to our roots.”
Lan adds, “By meeting the World Craft Council’s standards, Van Phuc silk will reach new heights, blending tradition with modern innovation.”
As a member of the Global Network of Creative Craft Cities, Van Phuc faces the challenge of maintaining its competitive edge. Khanh explains, “We’ve encouraged artisans to mark their silk with ‘Ha Dong Silk’ to ensure authenticity and hosted design competitions to innovate while preserving our heritage.”
Van Phuc silk is more than a fabric; it’s a symbol of Vietnamese creativity and resilience, a legacy that continues to inspire and evolve.
