The Truc Bach Night cultural event, a three-day affair from November 29 to December 1, offers a unique glimpse into Hanoi’s past and has become a major draw for visitors, especially the youth, curious to experience the lives of their parents during the subsidy era of the 1980s.

One visitor, Tran Hong Phuc, from Nam Dinh province, dressed in fashion from four decades ago, shared his excitement about the event. “It’s like stepping into a time machine,” he said, “The attention to detail in the displays and the entire setup truly transport you back to the pre-1986 era, giving us a glimpse into the lives of our parents and grandparents.”

Dao Nguyet Minh, a young visitor, also appreciated the authenticity of the recreation, noting that it seamlessly blended the past with subtle reminders of the hardships faced before the country’s renovation process. “It’s a great way to learn about the resilience and romance of the previous generations,” she added.

The event also prompted reflections on the values of the subsidy era. Ngoc, another attendee, shared, “It made me realize how we often chase after material things, forgetting to cherish the simple joys of family and friendship. My father always reminisces about how sharing sweets with friends created lifelong bonds. It’s a reminder to appreciate the sincere connections we forge.”

By bringing the subsidy period to life, the event organizers inspired young creatives to draw from the past, fostering a deeper appreciation for history and a wellspring of ideas for future cultural and artistic endeavors.

It sparked conversations between generations, as grandparents and parents shared stories of their childhood, creating a deeper bond with their young listeners.

Hanh Trinh, a resident of Tay Ho District, and her son, Quoc Huy, took a stroll through the exhibits, reliving the past. “It’s important for the younger generation to understand the challenges faced by their elders,” she said, “It fosters gratitude for the present and a sense of connection to Hanoi’s rich cultural heritage.”

Truc Bach Night wasn’t just a trip down memory lane for locals; it also captivated foreign tourists, offering them a unique insight into Vietnam’s history.

Sammy and Louise Smithe, a Canadian couple, were among the enthusiastic crowd. “We felt so fortunate to stumble upon this ‘festival’ and immerse ourselves in a part of Vietnam’s history,” shared Sammy, “It evoked a range of emotions and gave us a deeper understanding of the resilience and spirit of the Vietnamese people, which makes our experience in this beautiful and welcoming country even more meaningful.”

The couple also enjoyed sampling traditional snacks and grooving to the lively music. “I had no idea Boney M was still loved here!” exclaimed Sammy, “It brought back so many memories, and I couldn’t help but dance along.”
