Pho, a beloved breakfast dish among Hanoians, has become an iconic symbol of Vietnam’s rich culinary culture, gaining international recognition beyond its borders. On December 2, a new restaurant, “Pho Ha Noi 1979,” opened its doors in the heart of Sydney, Australia, on Burwood Street.

The restaurant quickly gained popularity, with diners lining up to indulge in the fragrant and flavorful Pho. The unique taste of this dish lies in the intricate blend of spices and herbs, with the soul of Pho residing in its slowly cooked broth. This careful preparation infuses the broth with a rich, gentle sweetness and an irresistible aroma.

The flat noodles, made from rice flour, have a soft and slightly chewy texture. A complete bowl of Pho is adorned with green onions and herbs, with optional additions of bean sprouts, lime juice, fresh chili slices, chili sauce, or chili-garlic vinegar to suit individual preferences. Tommy Le, the manager of Pho Ha Noi 1979, shared that he wanted to bring the authentic flavor of Vietnamese Pho to Australia, catering to both the Vietnamese community and local diners.

He explained that by combining traditional Pho cooking techniques with a focus on green and natural ingredients, excluding MSG, he aims to provide a unique and satisfying experience for all customers. The opening of Pho Ha Noi 1979 was a proud moment for Nguyen Trong Thin, owner of a famous Pho brand in Hanoi. With his decades of experience, he joined the young and passionate kitchen staff to ensure the best Pho was served on the opening day.

The restaurant was well-received by both Vietnamese and foreign diners.

Thin believes that the restaurant will not only preserve traditional values but also serve as a gathering place for the Vietnamese community and a destination for international tourists to experience a true taste of Vietnam. Ngoc Bui, owner of Pho Ganh in Illawong, shared her excitement about finally finding authentic Northern-style Pho at Pho Ha Noi 1979. She praised the clear broth, perfectly seasoned with chili sauce and garlic vinegar, creating the best Pho she had ever tasted in Sydney.

Henry Nguyen, an overseas Vietnamese, expressed his satisfaction with the rich and spicy broth, stating that it brought back childhood memories. He added that Pho Ha Noi 1979 successfully captured the authentic flavor of Northern pan-fried beef Pho. The restaurant also received positive feedback from a Chinese diner, who enthused about the delicious and attractive Pho, declaring Vietnamese Pho as the best in the world.

Pho Ha Noi 1979 has not only satisfied the cravings of the Vietnamese community in Australia but also introduced the unique flavors of Vietnamese Pho to international diners, spreading the love for this iconic dish beyond Vietnam’s borders.
