The Asian Painters Auction- Modern Vietnamese Art witnessed a remarkable sale, with Vu Cao Dam’s masterpiece, “Motherhood,” fetching EUR528,560. The renowned Vietnamese painter and sculptor (1908–2000) created a lasting legacy with this artwork, showcasing his talent and mastery of his craft.
A graduate of the Indochina College of Fine Arts in 1931, Vu Cao Dam was an integral part of the famous Vietnamese ‘quartet painters in Europe.’ His work, “Motherhood,” created in 1944, exudes a sense of softness and tranquility, with its pastel tones and natural, soothing undertones, as noted by Aguttes. The composition’s perfect balance and delicate treatment elevate it to the pinnacle of the artist’s career.
Aguttes also auctioned two exceptional works by Vietnamese painter Thang Tran Phenh, each selling for EUR452,000. “The Village Chief Reading Books to the Villagers” and “The Village Chief on Horseback Asking for Directions” offer a glimpse into the artist’s talent and the unique perspective of the time.
Aguttes shared the story behind these two silk ink paintings, entrusted to them by a family with deep roots in Indochina. Created in the Hanoi region, these works likely found their way into the family’s possession through exhibitions or fairs associated with the School of Fine Arts during the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Thang Tran Phenh, also known as Tran Van Binh, was a celebrated artist of his time, standing alongside the likes of Le Huy Mien and Nam Son. His artistic prowess was recognized early on, winning the fine art prize from the Tien Duc Enlightenment Association in 1923. He further honed his skills at the Indochina Fine Arts College, joining the ranks of renowned artists like To Ngoc Van and Vu Cao Dam.
The auction also featured other notable Vietnamese painters, with Le Pho’s “The Rose” achieving a remarkable sale price of EUR452,000.
