UNWTO announced the list of Best Tourism Villages 2023 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on Thursday.
Among the 260 villages from 60 nations participating in the third edition of UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages initiative, Tan Hoa Commune in Minh Hoa District was chosen for recognition.
Vietnam National Authority of Tourism stated that the commune was honored as one of the world’s best tourism villages due to its cultural and natural diversity, commitment to preserving community-based values, and dedication to innovation and sustainability in economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
Tan Hoa is located approximately 8 kilometers from Quy Dat Town and possesses enchanting landscapes as well as unique cultural features.
However, Tan Hoa Commune is known as a flooding hotspot with frequent submersion under floodwaters for several consecutive days during the rainy season.
After a heavy rain in 2010, locals in Tan Hoa Commune began constructing rafts and floating houses to adapt to floods in 2011.
Over the past few years, Tan Hoa residents have actively participated in tourism activities, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction.
With the support of some enterprises, Tan Hoa has transformed into a weather-resilient tourism village offering various tourism products and services.
Ho An Phong, vice-chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the recognition of Tan Hoa as one of the world’s best tourism villages serves as a stepping stone for tourism development in the commune.
“The prestigious title enables Tan Hoa to shine on the Vietnamese tourism map and gradually attract international travelers,” added Phong.
However, he also emphasized the importance of preserving the cultural identities of Tan Hoa as a Vietnamese rural area.
Thanks to its natural beauty and uniqueness, Tan Hoa was selected as a filming location for significant parts of the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ released in 2017.
UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages program was initially introduced in 2021 with the goal of using tourism as a driver for rural development and well-being.
So far, more than 70 villages from nearly 40 countries have been recognized as Best Tourism Villages.
