According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam’s annual consumption of plastic bags exceeds 30 billion. On average, each household utilizes five plastic bags daily.

According to the ministry, a significant number of plastic bags are disposed of in landfills after a single use.

The cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the two largest metropolises in Vietnam, witness a staggering daily discharge of 80 metric tons of plastic waste. Plastic bags alone contribute to approximately 7-8 percent of this total.

In order to address the significant quantity of single-use plastic bags that are being discarded, the city administration of Ho Chi Minh Chinh City has implemented a comprehensive plan. This plan aims to accelerate our efforts in effectively managing, reducing, reusing, recycling, and treating plastic waste within the city over the period of 2022-2025, with a long-term vision extending to 2030.

The city is committed to reducing the usage of non-biodegradable plastic bags and single-use plastics by 2030.
